Insulated Socks And Boot Liners

I’ve realized that most hiking boots aren’t insulated. This is because if they are insulted, they don’t breathe as well. Hiking boots are really great if they keep you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot.

Since I am heading into a real winter climate, I was checking out different options of liners to have some insulation on my feet. The best option would be something that includes a Polartec fleece fabric or a Thinsulate fabric. Duratherm from Gore works well too. Most manufacturers will have their own insulating materials.

Additional boot liners aren’t easy to find, but they exist. The thing is to find one that fits in your hiking boot. After doing some research, I’ve discovered special socks.

There is the VaprThrm insulated sock from RBHDesigns which I find really interesting. Rocky Boots does a 13″ oversock out of Gore-Tex. The Rocky sock is a thin affair. The VaprThrm is almost 15.5″ high and is nice and thick. The socks cuffs aren’t waterproof, so water can leak in through there. It’s best to have them covered up.

Cabela makes a 13″ Gore-Tex sock which includes 100g of Thinsulate material.

These solutions should help isolate your hiking boots fully. Expect to pay between 40 to 45$ for these socks.
Wigwam makes an Ingenius insulated boot sock. They have some Gore-Tex in them and also have a second layer to insulate.

From the fabric content of the heavyweight Expedition Summit Bridgedale socks, we see that they do contain some insulating material. These are the warmest socks from Bridgedale and cost about US20$. They don’t use any Gore-Tex material, but use Endurofil which includes polypropylene. Polypropylene is used in thermal underwear. Patagonia’s Capilene is made out of polypropylene. Most hiking boots do use Gore-Tex in them, so what you are looking for is a good insulated sock.

Patagonia makes a Heavyweight Mountaineering sock on the same principles.
