In Treatment Week 8 Monday 10AM S01E36 (HBO)

In Treatment will last a total of 43 episodes. In Treatment is based on the Israeli series Betipul. Gabriel Byrne plays Paul Weston, a psychologist trying to deal with his patients while going through some personal problems. Each show focuses on a different patient. Mondays feature Laura, an anesthesiologist infatuated with Paul. Tuesdays feature Alex, an ex-fighter pilot traumatized by events that happened a few years ago. Wednesdays feature Sophie, a suicidal teenage gymnast with Olympic aspirations. Thursdays feature Jake and Amy, a couple in couple’s counseling. Fridays feature Gina, Paul’s own therapist and mentor that he stopped seeing 8 years ago for some reason.

I’ve always loved psychology. This show really feeds that need. The sessions are almost verbatim of what would happen in a real session. This show is about characters, not actions. It’s a very smart show and I am also very surprised that Marky Mark is the executive producer. Marky Mark has had success with Entourage so it makes sense that he decided to try out other projects.

This is a great show. I really liked it. I find that it’s best to watch it a few episodes at a time. I recommend this show. I like watching it in batches. Since the show only lasts between 21 and 29 minutes, this is easy to do. My favorite sessions are with Sophie. Jake and Amy’s sessions are harder to watch, since most married couples have gone through problems at some point in their lives. But they are enlightening.

In this session Paul and Laura meet at a funeral. Unsurprisingly, things didn’t end well for Alex. He insisted in flying. He didn’t last long. A few days after he was still training, he died. This is the fallout of that affair.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Paul is at a funeral. It’s Alex’s funeral. There are a lot of navy folk around. The chapel is filled with people. Paul signs his name. He puts down Dr. Paul Weston, then crosses out the Dr. He walks by the casket to pay his respects. He tells Michaela and Alex’s parents that he is deeply sorry for their loss. Michaela isn’t how I imagined her. Alex spots Daniel and Sean, Alex’s gay friends in the audience. It must be strange looking at the people and knowing so much about them, but without having spoken a word to them.

Paul talks with Roy, Alex’s son. Laura shows up. Paul called her. She tells him that he needs to cancel the rest of his afternoon sessions. Paul tells Laura that his mother is buried at this cemetery. He doesn’t come often since his middle child Rosie is named after his mother. He couldn’t handle seeing his daughter’s name on a grave.

Daniel gives Paul directions to the gravesite. A few moments later, Alex’s father talks with Paul and Laura. He mistakenly believes that Laura is Paul’s wife. Paul is quick to correct this mistake. Laura is gorgeous in the light.
Paul says that when he was younger, his step-mother was mistaken often for his wife or his sister. She was 26 years younger than his father. He was a heart surgeon. She was a patient on whom he performed a bypass surgery. They started dating. His father left his mother. It was hell. While he was growing up, Paul wanted to be anything but his father. His father was a very selfish man. Whatever he wanted he took, without thinking of the consequences or the feelings of others.

Laura doesn’t want to go to the grave. She tells Paul to go without her. She leaves.
