In Treatment Week 9 Sophie Wednesday 4PM S01E41 (HBO)

In Treatment will last a total of 43 episodes. In Treatment is based on the Israeli series Betipul. Gabriel Byrne plays Paul Weston, a psychologist trying to deal with his patients while going through some personal problems. Each show focuses on a different patient. Mondays feature Laura, an anesthesiologist infatuated with Paul. Tuesdays feature Alex, an ex-fighter pilot traumatized by events that happened a few years ago. Wednesdays feature Sophie, a suicidal teenage gymnast with Olympic aspirations. Thursdays feature Jake and Amy, a couple in couple’s counseling. Fridays feature Gina, Paul’s own therapist and mentor that he stopped seeing 8 years ago for some reason.

I’ve always loved psychology. This show really feeds that need. The sessions are almost verbatim of what would happen in a real session. This show is about characters, not actions. It’s a very smart show and I am also very surprised that Marky Mark is the executive producer. Marky Mark has had success with Entourage so it makes sense that he decided to try out other projects.

This is a great show. I really liked it. I find that it’s best to watch it a few episodes at a time. I recommend this show. I like watching it in batches. Since the show only lasts between 21 and 29 minutes, this is easy to do. My favorite sessions are with Sophie. Jake and Amy’s sessions are harder to watch, since most married couples have gone through problems at some point in their lives. But they are enlightening.

In this session Sophie has a surprising visit from her dad during therapy. She takes the opportunity to show him how she feels. It’s a groundbreaking session, even though Paul would have liked to prepare more for it, Sophie is mature enough to deal with it right now. Her dad is like a kid.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Paul gives Laura a call. He would like to meet for coffee, but he gets her voicemail.

Sophie is going to her therapy. Her dad shows up before she goes in to see Paul. He asks why she didn’t call him after she kicked ass at the trials. He wonders why she hasn’t called her. He wants to take her out to eat. She has therapy. He says that she’ll wait. He wants to know if they talk about him in therapy. He wants to talk with Paul. Sophie is embarrassed.

Zack walks in. Paul is waiting for her with some balloons. Zack is trying to push himself in. Paul doesn’t let him in without having it talked over with Sophie first. Zack walks away. Sophie runs after her dad. Zack is pissed.

Zack makes some kind of a crack that he’d raised her better. Sophie tells him that he didn’t really raise her. Most of the time, he was far away.

Paul tells her that there are rules to follow and that her father isn’t exempt. Paul says that he understands how her mother feels. Her father shows up unannounced and invades her private life. He’s like a perpetual kid. She wants to make him happy. Paul tells her that he’s the parent, not she.

Zack comes back and knocks on the door. Sophie wants to let him in. Paul asks her she is sure. Paul lets him in. Zack made a list about things that he did for his daughter. He says that every morning from the ages of six to ten, he would take her to practice. He would wait to her and take her to school. He would help her do her homework. He’s just trying to guilt trip her. It’s pathetic.

He’s blaming her for the way he is feeling. Sophie says that he hasn’t seen her for three years. He has been in NYC. He tries to play it down. They spoke on the phone. She confronts him about leaving her.

She tells him to leave. She doesn’t want him here. He doesn’t know her anymore. Paul tells him that Sophie needs him to reclaim their relationship. Sophie tells him that they can’t put back something that’s been broken.
He didn’t even know that Sophie tried to kill herself. He’s shocked to hear it. She wants him to leave. She says that it’s her therapy. Hers alone, not his.

Jesus I kicked my father out.
Sophie to Paul.

Paul thinks that it’s a sign of maturity. People can change. Her father might realize the pain that he’s caused her. Sophie wants to go after her dad. She’s going to Denver to train. She wants to be by herself. Paul tells her that she can call him anytime she wants. She gives him a big hug as she leaves. She’s got a smile on her lips as they say their goodbyes.

Rosie comes in. Paul is watching Sophie and Zack talk outside on his lawn. Rosie asks if her mom and dad are talking. Paul says that they are trying.
