Moonlight Sonata S01E16 (CBS)

It’s been a while since there has been a vampire show on TV. Angel was just a continuation of Buffy. Blade was an action show. Moonlight is somewhere in between. It’s gritty and romantic, which isn’t appalling. Unlike Angel and Forever Knight, Mick St-John isn’t that old of a vampire, so the flashbacks all take place in the 1950s to 1970s.

Alex O’Loughlin plays Mick St-John, a vampire private detective. He is a vampire who fully remembers what it meant to be human and longs to be human. Before the break, the big intrigue was that his vampiric ex-wife came back human. Since Mick longs to be human, he needs to find out if there is a cure for vampirism. Coraline disappeared before Mick could investigate it fully. He managed to get some of her blood though.

It was announced on May 13 that Moonlight was officially canceled. The last episode before the break gives a surprising explanation of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. I thought that this was very interesting. Coraline is out of the picture for now, but it would be nice to see what happens to her in Europe. There hasn’t been much revealed about vampiric society and these tidbits make it really tantalizing to see the interpretation.

I equate Mick with a vampire looking for Golconda., a state of enlightenment from the fictional World of Darkness. In this episode, Mick and Beth get closer together while he explores his new humanity. However it’s short lived since a vampire threatens her safety and Mick has to make the ultimate sacrifice once again, this time willingly to save the girl he loves.

This episode was interesting. There is a little more revealed about vampire society and how they police themselves. It’s obvious that humans aren’t allowed when they make these kinds of decisions, no matter how much Beth would like to be involved.

Is this show so bad that it’s good? Maybe. For sure the acting isn’t the best part. The paltry romance between Beth and Mick gets annoying at times. Also the fact that the show doesn’t really reveal much about vampire society is annoying. The show would have been much more successful if the supernatural element was exploited in a dark and gothic way, instead of the little tidbits that have been offered to the viewers.

Am I going to miss this show? Not really. In the last news that I’ve read, it seems that the producers are shopping for another network to buy in. I doubt that it will happen.Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Josef gets honored by Hearst College. Beth is surprised that Josef is out with his lawyer Simone. He drinks her blood twice a week. She’s what vamps call a freshie.

Dominic’s managers are vamps. Dominic is an old college basketball player who got drafted by the NBA. They dance.

They hear a scream and find Dominic dead with Simone near the body. Beth interviews her as part of the DA’s team. She tells how she was with Josef. He drank of her. She went to the bathroom to get cleaned up. She heard a noise and found Dominic. She tried to get him out of tub. She doesn’t want to involve Josef.

Talbot says that Simone was sleeping with Dominic. Josef is upset. Mick wonders what is affecting him. Beth thinks that he is jealous. Mick says that it’s not like him to get involved with freshies.

Beth interviews Emma, one of Dominic’s managers. She is Jackson’s sire. She came over to the US from Ireland during the famine. She was turned by an unnamed vampire on the boat. She never knew her sire.

Hank and Dominic had a fight during the party. Hank didn’t make the big time. Dominic did.

Guillermo says that Dominic had sex right before he died. His neck was snapped. There was some blood found.

Mick comes home and finds Josef at his place with Simone. She has been released, but not cleared. Mick and Beth are investigating. Josef bites Simone in front Mick and offers her wrist to Mick. Mick waits until Simone acquiesces and proceeds to taste her blood. They both have their fangs out when Beth walks in. It’s kind of like a strange vampire ménage-à-trois. She isn’t happy. Mick didn’t describe the sexual pleasure that a freshie feels when a vampire drinks.

Beth wants Mick to drink from her, and only her. It’s a bit strange. They go to visit Hank. He isn’t here. Mick hears his heart and knows that he is lying. They catch him.

Guillermo finds the blood that was found on Dominic. It’s vampire blood.

Mick talks with Jackson. Dominic was involved with Lisa, another vamp. Dominic didn’t know that she was a vampire. Lisa is a cheerleader. He interviews her. She’s been in college for 40 years. She didn’t hook up with Dominic that night. Lisa says that Emma was sleeping with Dominic.

Hank says that a girl killed Dominic. It was Emma. Hank confesses that she looked beastly. Talbot is on the way to arrest her. Mick arrives just in time to stop a bloodbath. He makes sure that she keeps the masquerade going.

Beth and Mick give Emma and Jackson’s place a once over. Jackson wants to visit her. He didn’t know that she was involved with Dominic. They speak below audible level. She went crazy when Dominic says that he was sleeping with Lisa, she lost it. She blames St-John. She threatens to reveal her true identity. She will give up every vampire in LA. He’s got 24 hours.

Later, after Emma’s bail hearing, Josef and Mick are talking. Simone drops by to see Beth.

To love us is to watch us die.
Simone on vampires.

Josef tells Mick that Simone was interested into becoming a vamp.

Beth drops by on Mick. He’s in some kind of meeting with Josef and other high level vampires in LA. Mick says that they don’t have a choice. They are going to have to break her out. Otherwise more than 300 vampires will be exposed.

Guillermo will be in an ambulance. Emma is going to get transported to another prison. The cleaners will create an accident as a diversion. Josef and Mick will extract Emma.

During the op, Emma looks bad. Things go wrong. Logan has to stop the van. He creates a real accident. They get Emma out and into the ambulance.

The vampires have a little trial. Emma threatened all of them. The crime is treason the penalty is death. Jackson arrives. The cleaners incinerate both of them when Jackson refuses to leave Emma’s side.

Talbot gets a list of names. He gets a phone call. It says that the files are for his eyes only. It’s a list of vampires.

Mick comes to see Beth. He tells her that Emma and Jackson are dead. She thinks that eventually he’d want to him to turn her into a vampire. Emma and Jackson made her realize that Mick was right. She can’t do this anymore. Mick leaves. I think that Beth is just jumping the gun. They haven’t even been going out for that long and already they talk of kids and lifelong commitments. Anyways, it doesn’t really matter anymore. The show is over.

Mick can’t let it go. He goes back to see Beth. Mick says that he loves Beth.
