Fringe The Equation S01E08 (Fox)

St-Jean-Baptiste Church

It’s fitting that this show will premiere on Fox, since this was the network of the X-Files. Fringe has got much in common with the X-Files, yet it is different. Fringe is the latest show of wunderkind J.J. Abrams. Like most new shows, the pilot was leaked on the internet a few weeks ago.

Just like a few other shows, like True Blood, I’m happily surprised by Fringe. The production values are great and I’m enjoying it a lot. A lot of money has been pumped into this show, and it just looks fabulous. The protagonists are also an interesting bunch. There isn’t much more that we learn of the Pattern, but Massive Dynamics is most definitely deeply connected with those events, even though they aren’t sharing their information with Agent Dunham.

I think that this show takes a few common elements from Alias, especially for all the things that concerned the mystic scholar Milo Rambaldi. The same kind of esoteric science is involved in this show. It’s done very well. I’d actually like to see this type of mystic science have more of an impact on the show. It would suit the show very well. A bit of the supernatural wouldn’t be bad either.

A obsessed boy has been abducted and it leads the team to investigate a series of kidnappings of scientists. It leads Walter back to St-Claire’s, the mental asylum in which he spent 17 years. The warden is keen to get Walter back for some reason and orchestrates events so that he can. However, he underestimated Dunham’s reach. This episode continues what started in the last episode. I really enjoyed it and I recommend it.

A boy is in a car with his father. He’s composing music. He asks his dad to slow down the tempo of the windshield wipers. They come upon a woman driving an old Mercedes-Benz. The father leaves to help the woman. He calls a tow truck for her. The woman looks around expectantly when the father wants to take a look at the engine. Strange LED lights flash in his eyes. Some sort of subliminal programming.

He wakes up hours later. His boy is gone and the woman is nowhere to be seen. Dunham is put on the case by Broyles. This isn’t the first time this had happened. This has happened three times before. All of the victims were abducted by the same woman. Before, academics disappeared.

Bishop knows about the flashing lights, green, green, green, red. He doesn’t recall anymore. In Highland, Connecticut, Dunham is questioning the father. Ben is an expert. Nine months ago, the wife was walking the boy to school. They were hit by a car. Ben was in a coma for six days. When he woke up, he was different. The father shows Dunham a DVD. He started playing the piano when he came home. He had never played before. Two weeks later, he started composing his own music.

Ben is being held by the woman. He is told that his mother isn’t dead. At Harvard, Bishop is putting together something that will help him think about the lights. Bishop was asked to put together a complex series of flashing lights to force customers to buy products. He was hired by an advertising company. It wasn’t successful, it only made them nauseous. However, Bishop thought that a series of flashing green lights followed by a red one would work well.

He experiments on Peter and matches the experiment. Francis phones Dunham. Based on the description of the father, they identified the kidnapper, Joanna Ostler, a neuro-scientist. The problem is that she died 10 years. She was in an accident and her body was never recovered.

Bishop is singing Christmas songs in order to remember the lights. It turns out that Dashal Kim mentioned the lights to Bishop in St-Claire’s. He was there at the same time as Bishop. He killed his wife after being hypnotized by a woman and flashing lights. Kim worked with the DOD, so there is a problem getting clearance to visit him. It will take a while.

The woman is bringing Ben to see his music. When Ben turns around, he sees his mom. When Bishop sees a photo of Kim’s wife’s murder, all he sees is the equations. Bishop says that Kim was obsessed by the equation. Ben was obsessed by a musical piece. Peter thinks that the equation is a recurring theme. They extract the music from Kim’s formula. They were obsessing about the same things.

Ben’s mom tells Ben to finish the song. At St-Claire’s, Dunham tries her hand in seeing Kim. The warden allows Bishop to see Kim and ask the questions. Bishop agrees reluctantly to go back. Peter didn’t want this. He knew that it would be hard for his father. Bishop questions Kim, but he isn’t getting anywhere. He agitates Kim and is sedated. This was Sumner’s plan all along. He tells Dunham and Peter that he will be keeping Bishop in custody. In his cell, Bishop gets the visit of another Bishop. Dunham has to get a court order to get Bishop out again.

They have to wait until morning for the court order to take effect. Peter has an idea about what alias Ostler would use. He’s found a Joanne Hyatt that fits his profile. Meanwhile, Ben is working with his mom on the music. Ben doesn’t know how it ends. Ben’s mom starts to bleed in her face. Ostler tells Ben that it’s all his fault.

Bishop is talking with Kim again. He sees his other self in the distance. Kim doesn’t want to talk about math. Kim says that the woman promised him things, what he wanted most of all. But when he couldn’t solve the equation, she took it all away.

None of it was real, she hurt him and put him in a dungeon. Ben is being probed and manipulated by devices while he plays on a piano. Kim says that he was in a dungeon in a red castle. Peter arrives at St-Claire’s with the court order. Sumner tells him that he will petition the state to remove Walter from Peter’s care. Peter tells him that Sumner has no idea what he’s capable off. He implies a threat.

When Peter tells Dunham about the red castle and the dungeon, she clicks on a red house in her search area. The house isn’t a house, but some kind of amusement park building. Dunham and Francis go through its bowels and separate to cover more ground. The tunnels are vast. She finds Ben hooked up to some machine. Joanna surprised her, and there is a catfight. When Dunham corners her, she uses her flashing lights to escape.

Bishop tells Peter that he needs his own room. He needs more space. Joanna meets up with Loeb, from the last episode. She’s got wat she came for. He hooks up a machine. The equation helps a machine teleport an apple. Loeb promptly shoots Joanna.
