Doctor Who is a long-running, award-winning British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious alien time-traveller known as “the Doctor” who travels in his space and time-ship, the TARDIS, which appears from the exterior to be a blue police phone box. With his companions, he explores time and space, solving problems and righting wrongs.

The show’s lead character is currently portrayed by David Tennant. A Christmas special co-starring Kylie Minogue aired in December 2007, and the fourth series started on 5 April 2008. For that series, Catherine Tate will reprise her role of Donna Noble, from the 2006 Christmas special, as the Doctor’s latest companion. Midway through the series, Freema Agyeman will also return to her role of Martha Jones, following a multi-episode guest appearance in the Doctor Who spin-off series, Torchwood. John Barrowman will continue his role as Captain Jack Harkness, and Billie Piper will return as Rose Tyler for three episodes. Elisabeth Sladen is also set to return as Sarah Jane Smith in a cameo role.

After a 2008 Christmas special and three further specials starring David Tennant, scheduled to air in 2009, Doctor Who is planned to return in 2010 for a fifth full length series.

Warning: spoilers ahead.

The Doctor is a long lived alien from the planet Gallifrey. He’s a Time Lord and travels through time thanks to his aging time capsule the Tardis. David Tennant is the tenth Doctor. My favorite has always been Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor. The Doctor periodically regenerates. When he does so, he changes outward appearance which let the producers change actors easily. All Time Lords regenerate 13 times. The Doctor’s nemesis is the Master, a renegade Time Lord who found a way around this limit. Other enemies include the Black Guardian, the Daleks and the Cybermen.

During the previous serials, before 2005, Gallifrey was alive and well. It appears that for the new series, the Doctor is the only survivor of the last great Time War between the Dalek Empire and the Time Lords.

This is the first of a series of specials that will air this year. Since David Tennant couldn’t commit to a full series this year, due to some previous acting commitments, we are left with a bunch of specials.

Much like the Christmas Special of this year, this special isn’t that good. I found it annoying. Annoying because it was so short and not part of a broader storyline. Only a short glimpse. Since it isn’t part of a series, there is no real background here and it’s really disappointing if you compare it to Journey’s End. UNIT is back again to deal with a problem. The doctor finds the mouth of an expanding wormhole on present-day earth. He hops onto a bus to explore. It’s strange because he didn’t take the TARDIS with him.

Some guards are looking after a chalice. A cat burglar is going after it. It’s Michelle Ryan from Bionic Woman and Jekyll. She’s about to get away when the Doctor gets onto the bus. He offers Lady Christina some chocolate. The police are after her. The bus goes into a tunnel. The people on the bus start hearing voices. The Doctor’s detector is going nutty. Something happens to the bus. There is a flash of light.

The other end of the tunnel is blocked off. The detective says that the bus just disappeared. The bus is in a desert. Someone is watching them. It’s some alien making cliquety-insect-like noises. One of the women says that they are surrounded by the dead.

There are on a planet with three suns. The Doctor thinks that there is something strange about the sand. The Doctor shows them the door through which they came. The driver tries to go through and burns up. He appears on the other side as a skeleton. The detective says that it’s too much and he calls UNIT.

Lady Christina makes everyone get back inside the bus. The Doctor surmises that they need to get through the door in the bus. They were protected by a Faraday Cage. The Doctor was tracking a tiny wormhole. Carmen says that they were brought here. She’s a low-level psychic. She says that something is coming, riding on the wind. She says that it’s death.

UNIT arrives on the scene.

They start repairing the bus. The Doctor and Lady Christina leave to explore. They see a sandstorm coming towards them. The Doctor says that it isn’t a sandstorm. The Doctor calls UNIT. The call is forwarded to Captain Magumbo. She hands him off to Dr Taylor. Taylor is smart. He’s figured out how to measure the wormhole. The Doctor needs a capacity scan. The Doctor sends an image of the storm to Taylor. There is some metal riding the storm. A strange fly thing arrives with a gun of some sorts.

It takes Lady Christina and the Doctor inside its ship. They are Tritovores. They think that the Doctor is responsible for them being here. The Doctor wants to launch a probe. They are in the Scorpion nebula, on the planet of Samhelios. The city was turned into sand. The image was taken last year.

Taylor says that the wormhole is becoming bigger and bigger. It’s currently 4-miles wide. The storm is actually a swarm of manta-ray-like creatures. They must be billions. They must make the wormholes, and planet hop around to consume worlds. The creatures have bones of metal. Their velocity around the planet makes the wormhole. Their bodies are made to resist the stress of it. They have run out of petrol so the Doctor thinks about using the drive from the ship to power the bus. Lady Christina jumps into the shaft to retrieve the crystal matrix. The Doctor finds out that Lady Christina is a thief.

One of the creatures is trapped in the vents. Lady Christina just manages to get it. She traps the creature behind the security force field. A creature arrives and eats the Tritovores. The Doctor and Lady Christina run to the bus.

UNIT gets ready for a code red after the Doctor’s warning. Taylor has figured out a way to close the wormhole after they escape. The Doctor has to use the chalice. The UNIT Captain wants Taylor to close the wormhole immediately. He refuses.

The bus takes off. They go through the wormhole. They are back on earth. Three of the creatures are through. UNIT starts firing. Taylor closes the wormhole. The creatures are taken out by UNIT. Lady Christina gives the Doctor a big smooch on the lips. The bus lands.

The Doctor wants the Captain to hire two of the boys from the bus. She has brought the TARDIS home. Lady Christina wants to go with the Doctor. He says that all of his Companions die. Lady Christina is arrested.

Carmen tells the Doctor that his song is ending. She says that it is returning through the dark. She says that he will knock four times. The Doctor releases Lady Christina’s handcuffs. It will probably be enough for her to escape. She does so. She takes the flying bus and leaves.
