Extending Your Computer Desk With Billy Shelves

Finding enough space to fit your computer desk isn’t always easy, especially if you don’t have a lot of space available for this. It’s always a challenge, but we found Jessica’s solution quite elegant.

012610_rg_GustavBiDesk_02.jpgWhen you have limited space available, you need every square foot. Even though gigantic desks are great, it’s not always possible to have them in all homes. Jessica had this problem and came up with an innovative solution. Jessica and her husband decided recently that the IKEA Gustav computer desk would be perfect in their place.

012610_rg_GustavBiDesk_03.jpgThe Gustav fits in perfectly on the 45-inch wall that they had selected. The problem was that it didn’t have enough storage space. They needed some kind of overhead storage. All of the cabinets they found were too small or too big. They created a custom overhead unit using two 14-inch wide Billy cabinet extensions. This adds four extra shelves, two doors and some glass shelves as well. These extensions were intended to fit on the top of a Billy bookshelf, so they had no bottoms. They created some using the extra shelves.

They flipped the whole thing upside down to fit it onto the wall. All in all, it’s a great fit and it looks pretty spiffy. Not bad for a DIY IKEA hack.
