Mad Men is a American TV show on the cable network AMC. It was created by Matthew Weiner, best known for working on The Sopranos.
Mad Men follows the life of Don Draper, a self-made ad-man in Manhattan. He’s recently been made partner, after Roger Sterling, another partner, had a heart-attack. He’s got two children and a wife named Betty. Don is a womanizer, albeit not as blatant as a few other guys at the office. He always sees a girl on the side. The first half of the last season, he was seeing a girl name Midge. Later on, he became involved with Rachel Menken.
Don always tries to be discreet, but this actually caused some trouble. Rachel left at the end of last season on a cruise.
Don is an enigmatic man. He’s a man with no past. That’s because he was originally Dick Widman, the bastard child of a farmer and a prostitute. His mother died in childbirth and he went on to live a loveless life with his father, who died when he was 10.
Dick joined the army and took a new name when his lieutenant was killed. He reinvented himself since then.
Peggy Olsen is another main character. She started out as a secretary but has recently been made a junior copywriter with her own office. It’s almost unheard of in this office, which is dominated by men. Peggy had a bastard child last season, thanks to Pete, a junior exec at Sterling-Cooper, who has become jealous of her raw talent.
The show takes place in the 1960s. Misogyny, racism, sexism and other social issues are prevalent here. Mad Men doesn’t hide them. They actually are in your face, so it’s hard to forget that America used to be like that in the past. Everybody smokes and drinks in this show. It’s incredible that they manage to work as much drunk.
As with before, I feel like Mad Men episodes are best when watched in batches. As such, I’ve started watching season 4 two weeks ago. I’ve got 3 episodes to catch up.
Warning: spoilers ahead.

Sally makes a runner and wants to live with Don, but this isn’t possible. All the girls at the office see Sally’s pain and it gets emotional for them. You can see that Don would like to have Sally, but Betty would never allow it.

You’ve crossed the border from lubricated to morose.
Joan to Roger
Faye and Don screw. Don is late for an appointment. He leaves her in his apartment. She’s surprised.
Joanie’s husband will go to Vietnam right after basic training.
Peggy is out for drinks with her lesbian friend. A friend shows up. She met him at the party that was raided last time. She learns that Fillmore Auto Parts in the South won’t hire African-Americans.
Joanie gets a Swedish massage, pedicure, and manicure from Roger. That was thoughtful. The massage therapist is actually Swedish, that’s kind of cute. Roger makes a pass at her the next day. At least, she interprets it that way.
Peggy’s friend showed up again. He wants her to read something he wrote. It’s some kind of attack on Fillmore. Peggy tears it up. It would get her fired. Don is in the Fillmore Auto Parts meeting. The family can’t agree on a strategy. In the middle of the meeting, Megan gets Don. An old woman brought her. Sally ran away and took the train. She was avoiding the conductor. She didn’t have enough money.
The old coot on Don’s desk dies at her post. Megan gets Don. Don asks Faye to bring Sally to his apartment.
She died like she lived; surrounded by the people she answered phones for.
Roger about Ida Blanketship
Don comes home. He makes Sally promise that she will never do this again. She does. They get some pizza. Sally looks happy. Sally tells Don that she wants to live with him forever. The next day, she makes French toast with some rum. Don phones in and moves everything down to noon so that he can spend the morning with Sally. Sally had fun. She goes to the office with Don. Sally has a tantrum. She says that she doesn’t want to go home. She hates it there. Betty is coming by in a few minutes to pick her up. Don wants Faye to talk with her, it doesn’t work. Don tries to drag her away to the reception area, Sally runs off and falls. Megan comforts her. Betty picks her up. Megan is close to tears. The situation is sad. The family has split up and it will never be the same. The girl will probably never spend much time with her father again. Faye feels like she was put on the spot and failed something. Faye and Don kiss in his office.
Roger and Joanie get robbed on their way home. They kiss after. The next day, he apologizes. Joanie says that she’s married and so is he. Roger wants to rekindle their affair.
