Mad Men is a American TV show on the cable network AMC. It was created by Matthew Weiner, best known for working on The Sopranos.
Mad Men follows the life of Don Draper, a self-made ad-man in Manhattan. He’s recently been made partner, after Roger Sterling, another partner, had a heart-attack. He’s got two children and a wife named Betty. Don is a womanizer, albeit not as blatant as a few other guys at the office. He always sees a girl on the side. The first half of the last season, he was seeing a girl name Midge. Later on, he became involved with Rachel Menken.
Don always tries to be discreet, but this actually caused some trouble. Rachel left at the end of last season on a cruise.
Don is an enigmatic man. He’s a man with no past. That’s because he was originally Dick Widman, the bastard child of a farmer and a prostitute. His mother died in childbirth and he went on to live a loveless life with his father, who died when he was 10.
Dick joined the army and took a new name when his lieutenant was killed. He reinvented himself since then.
Peggy Olsen is another main character. She started out as a secretary but has recently been made a junior copywriter with her own office. It’s almost unheard of in this office, which is dominated by men. Peggy had a bastard child last season, thanks to Pete, a junior exec at Sterling-Cooper, who has become jealous of her raw talent.
The show takes place in the 1960s. Misogyny, racism, sexism and other social issues are prevalent here. Mad Men doesn’t hide them. They actually are in your face, so it’s hard to forget that America used to be like that in the past. Everybody smokes and drinks in this show. It’s incredible that they manage to work as much drunk.
As with before, I feel like Mad Men episodes are best when watched in batches. As such, I’ve started watching season 4 two weeks ago. I’ve got 3 episodes to catch up.
Warning: spoilers ahead.

Don is swimming laps at a pool. He’s not very fit because of all of the drinking and smoking. He’s keeping a diary.
At the office, Joey gives it to Joan, who’s not happy to be considered a madam or no longer that attractive anymore. She goes back home. Don still has an old coot on his desk. It seems like he’s cutting down on his liquor, but not his smoking.
Betty goes out with her husband and sees Don with his girl Bethany on a date at the country club. Henry and Betty are meeting some guy from the Congressman’s staff. Betty is jealous. Betty has words with Henry. Henry is annoyed that it ruined the evening. Henry wonders if they rushed into things. Meanwhile, Don and Bethany are making out. She undoes his belt and gives him a blowjob. The next day, he hears Faye having an argument with someone called David.
It’s not pleasant in the Francis home. Henry drives into Don’s boxes.
Don wants Joey on full time for the next few weeks. Joey is still being disrespectful to Joan.
Henry calls Don. He wants him to get his stuff out. It turns out that the Francises are paying Don rent. Joey does a drawing of Joan giving Lane head. He puts it in her window. She gives them a line about Vietnam. Peggy shows it to Don. Don tells her to do what she deems best. Yell at him or fire him, she needs to be in charge. She asks him to apologize and when he refuses, she fires him.
Don asks Faye out to dinner. She accepts.
Joan tells Peggy that all that she’s proven is that she’s just a secretary and that Peggy is just another humourless bitch. Joan isn’t happy that Peggy took matters into her own hands and had to defend her. Joan had handled it already. If she wanted to take it to another level, she would have talked with Lane.
Don picks up his stuff and throws it out. That’s kind of strange. Don goes out to dinner with Faye. He brings her home after kissing a bit in the car. Don drops by to see his son on his 2nd birthday. Betty is no longer upset.
