I’ve been a Nathan Fillion fan for quite a while. Ever since Firefly, I was really impressed by his acting. Since he is starring in a new series named Castle, I took it upon myself to watch it weekly.
Anyway, what do I like about Castle? Well it stars an obnoxious, womanizing novelist. Detective Kate Beckett is a closet hottie, played by Stana Katic. Her hotness is kind of hard to explain. The actress is quite hot, but in Castle, she toned it down. She doesn’t wear much makeup and favors a natural look, kind of like “Oh I’m hot, but I could be the girl next door, BTW, FYI, I’m still smoking hot.” That’s how I described her in my mind. She’s kind of got the ex-catwalk model look going for her, which is quite good.
So that’s a good point. Plus she’s Canadian and a good actress. That’s always a good combination.
Warning: spoilers ahead
The show centers around a novelist who is brought in to help deal with a string of murders which seem to be taken from the pages of his novels. At the same time, Castle has hit massive writer’s block after killing off the hero of his mystery book franchise, Derek Storm. Through Beckett, he is able to write once again.
Halfway between a drama and a romantic comedy, Castle is a fun show to watch. The characters play around a lot, making the viewer wonder when or if they will ever get together. It didn’t take Castle long to find out what makes Beckett tick. He uses clues and his imagination deftly.
ABC has started to release chapters of Richard Castle’s new book Heat Wave on its website. They are up to chapter 8 and I haven’t started yet, but it’s a pretty cool tie-in to the show.

Some old guy fishes a body out of the East River.
Alexis’ friend from middle school drops by. She’s gone all goth.
The body belongs to Donnie Hayes, an Iraq veteran. It turns out that he’s still working on the docks right now. They catch the guy. He bought Donnie’s union card for working on the docks. He paid $25K. His name is Grant Vairo.
Donnie was killed between 4 and 6 AM this morning. He’s got buckshot in his arm from 2 to 3 weeks ago. He was hit over the head.
They find out that he used the $25K plus his savings of $125K to pay off a mob guy named Pitts. Donnie had a chip for being is GA for 4 years.
Pitts says that Donnie decided to buy his bar. Pitts had an offer. His bartender wanted to buy it, but Donnie managed to get it for more. Beckett and Castle go undercover at the bar. Brian, the bartender, doesn’t know that Donnie is dead. He’s been skimming, but Donnie knew about it. They go into the hidden basement. Donnie’s office is there. Beckett finds buckshot holes and fresh paint. A waitress says that Donnie chased Pickup Pete away while he was harassing her. Last night, Pete showed out and Donnie threw him out. Donnie had 86ed Pete for life.
Pete has got a rap sheet and he’s got a shotgun. They pick him up. Pete says that Donnie paid him $1K for the damage. Pete says that he had plenty more. Donnie was spending a lot of money. CSU determined that Donnie left his bar alive.
Esposito and Ryan check out the ledger at the bar. He’s doing business with some high-end auction house. He was trying to sell an 1875 St-Myriam Rock of Scotland. It was a very rare bottle of scotch. It was sold for $26K to an internet millionaire.
He goes by the name of Magoo. He drank the bottle and was going to recycle it. The glass is the same, but it came from another bottle.
Castle figures out that there is some kind a secret door in Donnie’s basement. It’s from the Prohibition. They find 100 bottles of that old scotch. Some of them has gone missing. They find where Donnie’s body has been dumped into the sewer system. They hear someone in the distance. He gets away.
They check out some old maps and find out that Heisler is the killer. He checked out the old map.
Montgomery asked the DA about the bottles. She said that they belong to the city and that Castle can have a bottle for a donation to the police fund.
Castle bought The Old Haunt.
