Torchwood Miracle Day Dead of Night 04E03 (BBC)

Torchwood Miracle Day title card, via Wikipedia

Torchwood is a science fiction drama television program, created by Russell T Davies and starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles. It deals with the machinations and activities of the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, who deal with supernatural occurrences. An initial 13-part series was commissioned by the BBC as a spin-off from the long-running science fiction program Doctor Who with which it is closely interlinked.

From the Torchwood Wikipedia entry.

I’ve been busy watching the Tour de France and also playing Dragon Age II, so I haven’t had much time to watch shows, but at least I’m making time for Torchwood. It’s been a while since the last series, and I was wondering if Torchwood would be back. They had also killed off most of the team, so you always wondered in what form they’d be back. The new American additions to Torchwood aren’t that impressive. They are actually quite annoying, but the whole premise of Miracle Day is somewhat tantalizing. I’ve watched 3 episodes, and we still have to find out what exactly is going on.

The first three episodes were pretty good in my opinion. I watched them all in one go, so it’s safe to assume that the story is good. The whole collaboration with an American TV channel is somewhat strange, but it makes for an interesting setting since they spend a good amount of time in the US.

On Miracle Day, everyone stops dying. They don’t have eternal youth, but just continue on living, even when they are dismembered. Currently, an analyst and an operative from the CIA have recruited Jack and Gwen to investigate. In the midst of it all, they come across a strange conspiracy, involving PhiCorp, a big pharmaceutical company, who knew about Miracle Day before it would happen.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Danes is back on TV. Rex pulls a gun on the director. He’s been paid off for decades. He says that they know everything and they are everywhere. Rex shoots next to his ear to make him temporarily deaf.

They have a contact, the director’s phone, to whoever made the miracle.

There is a new cult out on the street. They call themselves the Soulless. They find a warehouse that the director has been protecting. They steal a car and go on their way. There are drugs everywhere. It’s PhiCorp. There are millions of them. It’s a big pharmaceutical company.

“It’s the perfect drug for the new world order.”

Their painkillers are non-narcotic, meaning that they keep you painless and wide awake. They have been stockpiling drugs for a long time, at least a year. The warehouse is huge. They were ready for the miracle. PhiCorp new it was coming.

“Genetic mistakes are no longer aborting.”

Jilly is now working for PhiCorp. She’s working Juarez pretty hard.

Rex wants to tell the Agency about PhiCorp. Rex discovers how it is working with Torchwood. Jack goes to a gay club.

Rex goes to find Juarez. They hook up. She’s hot. Jack pick sup some dude. They hook up as well. The sex scenes are juxtaposed. It apparently was controversial. Whatever.

Danes escapes from the cop who has been assigned to watch him. He is almost beat up, but runs to some cops. The cops beat him up a bit.

Rex tells Juarez about PhiCorp. She tells him about Jilly. He tells her that she needs to make the meeting with PhiCorp.

“Yes I can see you, a little bit too much of you. Not enough baby, put up the baby!”

Jilly wants to take Danes to a meeting with PhiCorp.

Juarez goes to the ‘meeting’ at PhiCorp. Gwen goes on the mission instead of Rex. She’s still got the Torchwood contact lenses. They spot Danes and Jilly there.

“I think of forgiveness as a cure”
Danes

The meeting is a presentation by a Congressman. PhiCorp is having these meetings worldwide. He will be introducing a bill to make all drugs available without prescriptions.

Gwen hacks into Jilly’s computer.

The mystery phone rings. The triangle spins and Rex answers. That was stupid. He asks idiotic questions. The phone will probably destroy itself. They need to leave. Rex thinks that he got them worried.

Jack goes to meet Danes for some reason. He pulls a gun on him. Danes has got protection now from PhiCorp. They beat him up.
