Torchwood is a science fiction drama television program, created by Russell T Davies and starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles. It deals with the machinations and activities of the Cardiff branch of the fictional Torchwood Institute, who deal with supernatural occurrences. An initial 13-part series was commissioned by the BBC as a spin-off from the long-running science fiction program Doctor Who with which it is closely interlinked.
From the Torchwood Wikipedia entry.
I’ve been busy watching the Tour de France and also playing Dragon Age II, so I haven’t had much time to watch shows, but at least I’m making time for Torchwood. It’s been a while since the last series, and I was wondering if Torchwood would be back. They had also killed off most of the team, so you always wondered in what form they’d be back. The new American additions to Torchwood aren’t that impressive. They are actually quite annoying, but the whole premise of Miracle Day is somewhat tantalizing. I’ve watched 3 episodes, and we still have to find out what exactly is going on.
The first three episodes were pretty good in my opinion. I watched them all in one go, so it’s safe to assume that the story is good. The whole collaboration with an American TV channel is somewhat strange, but it makes for an interesting setting since they spend a good amount of time in the US.
On Miracle Day, everyone stops dying. They don’t have eternal youth, but just continue on living, even when they are dismembered. Currently, an analyst and an operative from the CIA have recruited Jack and Gwen to investigate. In the midst of it all, they come across a strange conspiracy, involving PhiCorp, a big pharmaceutical company, who knew about Miracle Day before it would happen.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Esther goes to see her sister, who’s freaking out. There are a lot of outbreaks all over the US. She reports her sister Sarah. She is mentally disturbed and paranoid. Someone following the triangle has spotted her and reported in. He’s been told to follow her to Harkness and “take” care of them.
Torchwood arrives in Venice Beach, California. Rex calls Vera. There is a new campaign called “Dead is Dead”. A small town mayor named Ellis Hartley Monroe is behind it. She wants them segregated.
The Torchwood team settles in. They don’t know that they are under surveillance. Gwen gets a call from Rhys. She wants her dad out of the hospital. Jack wants Oswald and the woman Kissinger tracked.
Oswald wasn’t able to find out who was running PhiCorp. He couldn’t because they were hiding.
Rex goes to see his dad. He’s dealing in shady business and he doesn’t much care for Rex anymore.
They are trying to get a server out of PhiCorp. Only one guy has got access to all of it. His name is Frumpkin. They gather his biometric data. The man surveilling Torchwood moves on Frumpkin in his car. He takes his hand and his eye in order to get access to the servers as well.
In DC, they decide to bring all of the people from the ICU into the same hospital. It’s the beginning of a slum. Oswald is annoyed that he’s being upstaged by Hartley-Monroe. PhiCorp deals with her by abducting her.
Esther’s call got her sister committed and her nieces in foster care. Rex learns that Esther compromised them by visiting her sister.
Gwen goes into PhiCorp. Jack goes in as a delivery guy. They fake a fire. Esther directs the fire response teams to the 14th floor. This buys them 10 minutes.
The man is right behind Gwen. He takes her out. Jack goes back for her. He finds her all tied up. The man takes out Jack. Rex is pissed at Esther for this. He goes in.
The man wants to know what Jack gave them so long ago. Rex took the stairs. He’s bleeding out. He arrives just in time to stop the man from telling them who was behind it all. He shoots him a few times.
Oswald makes his rebuttal by going into the hospital. Hartley-Monroe is crushed.
PhiCorp is going to build overflow camps for the dead. They’ve been planning them for years. Gwen gets a call from Rhys. He tells her that her dad was moved to one of the overflow camps in Wales.
