It had been about a year since my last sneaker purchase. The Adidas AdiZero Feather didn’t fare well in the Taiwanese pollution, so I basically stopped wearing them. Also, they had developed a tear, which made them unsuitable for daily wear. I had gotten back some very old Converse One Star, that I had gotten out of storage last summer, which I had initially bought in Québec about 10 years ago. Since I had been very careful with them, they were still in good shape, albeit for a slight yellowing of the sole.
It was time for new sneakers and I bought some Nike All-Court Twist in Obsidian. I liked the retro look, and the fact that they were minimally branded. This lead to some Puma Mid S that were on special, as well as a pair of DC Shoes Court Graffik in camel. I added another DC Shoes pair, the Landau. DC Shoes makes some good sneakers. They are nice, wide, and thoroughly well padded. A pair of Converse Chuck Taylor Reform in gray were a nice addition. The New Balance Minimus Ionix 3090 were very light and nimble. This got me into some barefoot runners, the New Balance Minimus Trail 10. I needed a decent pair of trail runners, for river tracing and got some Merrell Maipei Waterpros. I couldn’t find any Vans Owens, so I settled for a Bedford in suede. I also bought some Nike Footscape Chukka Woven. I was somewhat amazed to find these in shops, so I bought a pair. They are extremely comfortable, although I would have liked a more minimal sole.
The Nike Air Zoom Hyperfuse in obsidian were a good addition, but I had gotten the bug of the Nike Air Force 1s. I started with an Air Force 1 Deconstruct in obsidian and added a AF1-XXX pair, the SI boot in golden harvest. The Deconstruct in wheat soon followed, with my favorite pair of AF1s, the Low Medal Stand, covered in 3M reflective material, but also in obsidian. I found some Nike SB Dunk Galaxys for $79 at a shop in Ximending. A pair of Air Force 1 ’07 in obsidian, two-toned with white, were discovered in an outlet for $60.
I have become a bit obsessed with the AF1s. There are at least 8 pairs that I want to get, of those 2 are already on reserve and more are on pre-order. There’s something iconic about AF1s. This year marks their 30th anniversary, and Nike is releasing lots of different colorways. I’ve also come to realize that many of the shoes that I have had in the past were simply copies of AF1s. The Deconstruct models are among my favorites. They are so simple yet comfortable and amazing to wear.
The AF1 YOTD III and Embroidery Pack are being released in Taiwan in November. I like have a nicely-sized rotation of shoes. That way, the shoes don’t really wear much since you wear them only 1 per 2 weeks or so. Then again, I wear some shoes more than others, especially the AF1.
