I started reading the Errol Morris blog over at the NYT a year or so ago ― I can’t really be sure of the exact date, but his long posts and examinations are though provoking. A few days ago, I started getting all this Opinionator junk in my feed reader. What happened to Errol Morris?

Humans Are Built For Long Distance Running

It’s not surprising, but with the injuries I sustained last year while running 40-50km a week, it was apparent that something was going on. It’s obvious that many runners pound the pavement way too hard, relying on their shoes to absorb the impact. This is why flat soles have made a comeback. You could always run barefoot or use a Vibram Five-Fingers, Personally, I’d like to cut down the chances of cutting my feet, so I’ll try running at least one a week with Five-Fingers.

On a hot day, the two scientists wrote, a human could even outrun a horse in a 26.2-mile marathon.

Concretizable Categories

As some topological spaces can be metrizable, the same can be said of categories. Certain categories can be concretizable, if they are isomorphic to a concrete category. I must be making progress as I understood almost everything in that post from David Speyer.

Are Marathons Safe?

Over at the Well blog of the NYT, Tara Parker Pope wonders if marathons are safe. As an endurance sport, if you aren’t well trained or well prepared, they can be dangerous. Her research indicates that triathlons are even more dangerous. How about ultra-marathons?

Vincent Laforest celebrates the release of the new Canon 1D with this short film that he shot completely in full HD 1080p resolution with it. The results are quite amazing and it makes you wonder why Nikon didn’t include full 1080p resolution video-taking capability with the D3S update that was just released a short while ago.
