Alcatraz Cal Sweeney S01E04 (Fox)

Alcatraz intertitle, via Wikipedia

Alcatraz is J.J. Abrams next show, and it’s currently being broadcast on Fox. The overall setup is eerily similar to Fringe, since it features an FBI task force investigating crimes, however that’s where the similarities end. Although, the show does feature Jorge Garcia from Lost and another blonde female lead, à la Anna Torv, but she’s much younger and starts out as a detective before getting assigned to Hauser and his team.  It turns out that Alcatraz was never closed. The prisoners just vanished and they have started reappearing for some unknown purpose. Each of them accomplishes some task for some nefarious over mind that we’ve yet to meet. The exact mechanics of the transport is unknown, but certain clues point towards wormholes of some kind.

Warning: spoilers ahead.

Person of Interest S01E01 (CBS)

This is the new series by Jonathan Nolan and JJ Abrams. The premise is somewhat interesting. I’d like to know more about this “machine”. I think that part is science-fiction, or at least close to going over the border of. Even so, the show isn’t bad. Ben from the Others from Lost (Michael Emerson) is playing the billionaire with a purpose and Jim Caviezel is the ex-CIA operative helping him out. The machine spouts out SSN of people who will be involved in “irrelevant” crimes, the ones that the machine was taught to ignore and erase. Finch built himself a backdoor and gets access to these lists. He says that this was before he realized that there was something more to these lists, the irrelevant crimes are really irrelevant at all.

Fringe Stowaway S03E17 (Fox)

It’s fitting that this show will premiere on Fox, since this was the network of the X-Files. Fringe has got much in common with the X-Files, yet it is different. Fringe is the latest show of wunderkind J.J. Abrams. Like most new shows, the pilot was leaked on the internet a few weeks ago.

Just like a few other shows, like True Blood, I’m happily surprised by Fringe. The production values are great and I’m enjoying it a lot. A lot of money has been pumped into this show, and it just looks fabulous. The protagonists are also an interesting bunch. There isn’t much more that we learn of the Pattern, but Massive Dynamics is most definitely deeply connected with those events, even though they aren’t sharing their information with Agent Dunham.

I think that this show takes a few common elements from Alias, especially for all the things that concerned the mystic scholar Milo Rambaldi. The same kind of esoteric science is involved in this show. It’s done very well. I’d actually like to see this type of mystic science have more of an impact on the show. It would suit the show very well. A bit of the supernatural wouldn’t be bad either.
