I remember that when I was a kid, it was a big deal when my dad got a Seiko analog watch that had a built-in alarm clock. It was definitely something different, and it looked better than a lot of digital watches. The Vulcain Nautical Cricket Watch was an early analog alarm watch from 1970, which is now being remade.

Smartwatches seem to be hot new thing that watchmakers are releasing these days. What I like about Casio’s offering is that it doesn’t look like most smartwatches, instead looking like most of Casio’s G-Shocks.

Concrete is an interesting material, but I’ve never thought about using it to make watches. Paris-based designer Dzmitry Samal has launched a series of watches, with frames made out of the durable material.

Here’s another example of a user-submitted design that’s been made into an actual watch by Tokyoflash. It takes a bit of time before you realize what you are looking for when you glance at the face of this watch, but once you have, telling the time is easy.

Do you like dark or colorful watches? If you gravitate towards the dark side, then check out these watches that the Japanese studio Nendo designed for the Danish watch company Noon. They are part of the Dark Noon collection and all have black faces, and white lines accented with gold.

We here at Technabob have a thing for cool digital watches, and here’s another to add to our collection. The o.d.m. Sunstitch watch is solar-powered and features a display that is reminiscent of the shadow of a sundial. The whole face of the watch is single LCD display, with the solar panel presumably hidden behind the face. The overall effect is a muted and minimal.

I’m a fan of unusual watches, and Ziiiro has made quite a few distinctive ones lately. Their new Proton and Ion watches are no exception. While the Ion will please people who like traditional analog watches, the Proton follows what Ziiiro has tried to do with some of their other models.

I especially like this tattoo, since its a watch that basically says that you’re very late, because who isn’t this time of year?
