Money makes the world go ’round or how I deconstruct our constant need for $

The feature photographer of today is Tom Quinn. Check out his flick site.

Today’s Rocketboom episode was decent. It introduced TikiBar to RB. It was somewhat funny. However, I’m still unsure of JoCo’s talents with reading the news. She still seemed a bit unsure of herself. Hopefully, she will be good next week. In this post, I cover money, some Big Brother, WordPress and more!

Skype protocol hacked by the chinese

It looks like some Chinese crackers were able to crack Skype’s codes. There were tests and looks like VOIP is going to be totally free in the next few weeks.

With close to 260000 blogs, I guess it’s normal for the hosting service to act up a bit. My stats for this blog and for other users have been frozen. As you know, I’m in the process of designing/ configuring a new hosting service to load up WordPress This should be happening in the next few weeks. For now, My main problem is how to back up and move the posts from this WordPress blog to a hosted service. There probably are some plugins or widgets that might help. I will keep you guys posted on the developments.

Big Brother UK

Looks like Lea Walker wasn’t the only one that had a porn video out. Out of all the girls, I was most surprised to learn that Imogen Thomas had an amateur porn video out. She hasn’t actually confirmed that it was her, but it looks like a video from a ex-boyfriend, à la Paris Hilton.

In a shocking turn of event, Nikki was the next evictee. She had 37% of the combined vote. This came as an outmost surprise to a lot of people. The forums and discussion boards were buzzing in anticipation for this announcement. It is a bit sad, that Nikki the funniest character with her temper tantrums and enunciation was evicted.

Even if no one in their right mind would want to live with Nikki, she was one of the most entertaining housemates. The number of classic “Nikki” events that happened in the house were most hilarious.

This whole thing happened because of Jayne, one of the new housemates that was introduced into the main house a week ago by Aisleyne from the house next door. Jayne’s constant rule breaking made Big Brother punish her and the house by putting all of the housemates up for eviction, except Jayne. Jayne then continued breaking the rules and was punished again by taking away the shopping task of this week. Big Brother seems to believe that peer pressure would be enough to handle Jayne. This was not the case.

Aisleyne or one of the new housemates should have gone. I’m pretty sure that the entertainment value of BBUK 7 will die down after her eviction.

Big Brother Australia

The housemates have been doing the pirate task for the last few days. Only Claire and Chris are aware that if they pass, the shopping budget will be tripled. There has been a lot of animosity because of the task, because Claire had to punish some housemates, from Darren, Jamie to Camilla.

On money in our society

I have expanded on a comment I made on K’s blog I made on K’s blog about money and how it influences us.

What would you do if you didn’t have to worry about money? Think about the TV show Windfall and imagine it happening to you. Let’s just extrapolate from the implications of being a millionaire, let’s just say that your normal bills will be taken care of. What would you do? For some people, their work is their calling. But a lot of people just work to pay the bills. What would happen if that wasn’t something that would concern you?

Sometimes the need to pay the bills is like a ball and anchor that you can never get free off because of the length of either your mortgage. It brings you down, shatters and distorts your dreams and keeps you grounded in the daily routine of work. Sometimes I think that money is evil and that our obsession with it and those that center their lives on the acquisition of wealth lead empty lives. There is more to life than money. It isn’t everything. It makes things easier, but does it in reality? Or is the next thing that you want just around the corner, just after you have finished paying off one thing, you feel another is needed.

For my part, I would continue writing and blogging, probably adding a daily vlog and podcast on top of my daily posts. I would also take the opportunity to travel and visit my friends in other countries, like JS in Thailand and maybe drop in on K in HK and Mr Angry in Australia. At some point, I would probably want to get published as a speculative fiction writer. I wouldn’t mind getting my hands back into drawing and designing sites and blogs, doing a lot more graphic design. There are a lot of us who would do great things if only they were given the opportunity.

I am seeing my move to BC as an incentive to get rid of a lot of things that have tied me done. Sure, there will be new things to ground me, but their impact on my psyche will be a lot less. I feel that I need to heal from these last few years.

Be my guest. I will definately tour you around HK given the chance to meet you. But of course you’ll be treating me for dimsums. I know a place where you can sit all the day ordering anything you see in a cart, no menus necessary.

Thank you for quoting me on this range. The pictures of nightstreet above seemed pretty much like the visions of HK. It’s fun to travel unless I have all the money – I can go to diff places as you mentioned.

Wow another set of gorgeous pictures! I like those with the zoom effects!

Money: Read “Your Money or Your Life” by this guy called Dominguez. Tells you all about it.

Thanks for this wonderful pictures and an very interesting post. I like to read your thoughts and reflection in this.
Thanks also for the comment on my WP blog – you are tempting me to come over to WP. One worry I have is that so much i “connected”, linked and combind to my blogger URL-adress and how to I keep or emigrate that?
Have a great end to your week:-)

Good morning guys, thanks for your comments. I too love the pictures.

@K: for sure, I’ll buy you some dim-sums. I’ll try visiting you next year when I plan on going to Thailand to see JS. I don’t know if I’ll be able to go to Australia, but HK is nearby.

@rennyba: well this is what I did. I claimed my new blog on Technorati (the new one from WP). WP enabled me to copy all my posts directly to the new blog, so I didn’t have to do it by hand. On my blog on blogger, I left a giant URL saying that the blog had moved with a link to it.

Some people like Mr Angry update both blogs and maintain them for backup purposes. But I don’t find that necessary, it doubles your workload when you are blogging. I just make backups of the posts that I produce. And then you resubmit to all the engines and all the carnivals and all the places where you had your links posted. For blogrolls, just email the blogger or leave them a comment to update the link. ie, if I became, I’d email everybody to tell them to update their links.

This situation or migration might take a few weeks to correct itself, but it will reestablish itself in the long run. I’m thinking similarly when I change to a hosted service, I’ll have similar problems.

That’s a treat! I will be looking forward to it, just send me an email and see what’s your plan like. It’s very close going to Thailand, just let me know. Thanks range.

Yeah K, that will probably be next summer. On another not, I’ve just gotten Reddit. I have gotten 10000 hits in the last 2 hours.

  11. 11 K July 15, 2006 at 14:50

That’s great! I see now that you’re hitting more this time. Keep it coming.

  12. 12 K July 18, 2006 at 17:07

What happened now with your stats? I don’t see it in your sidebar tho’.

  13. 13 range July 18, 2006 at 17:19

I took them offline for the time being. With the stats problem of WP being currently resolved, I am waiting to see some corrections in the numbers that I posted.

Hi range. If money weren’t a problem anymore, I’d probably put up a bookstore, but not so I can make more money, but so I can read a lot of books and share them with lots of people at the same time. I’d also work on some personal coding projects, but that’ll probably come only after I’ve had my fill of reading and writing — which would take a *really* long while!

  15. 15 range July 19, 2006 at 09:14

Yep, Lonemage, reading is fun. I wish I could read for a very long time too. I read every day, but not enough in my book.

  16. 16 lonemage July 20, 2006 at 00:56

oh btw, just added you to my blogroll. hope you don’t mind. 🙂
