Ever since I saw the 1st season of Life on Mars, I have been watching some copper shows from the 70’s from the UK. Mainly The Sweeney. I’ve also come across The Professionals recently. I have to say that these shows are quite entertaining. They are quite different from the mainstream police dramas of the USA. BTW, Life on Mars just got renewed for another seaason.
The good guys don’t always win and a lot of collateral damage happens when you aren’t careful. I was quite surprised to see Dennis Waterman, an actor that I’ve seen in the new show New Tricks playing George Carter, Jack Regan’s right hand man.
You can read more about The Sweeney and its impact on modern British TV here and on The Professionals here. The Professionals was actually a response to The Sweeney popularity on a rival network. The Professionals was critized for being too violent and moronic.
Having watched three seasons of The Sweeney, I feel that that show is really good. You never know what will happen next. I was quite surprised to find out that George Carter’s wife died in a episode in Season 2. The main reason why The Sweeney is so important is because it portrayed coppers in a human and fallible way. Also, the detectives on the Flying Squad use snouts and methods that are either controversial or sometimes even illegal to catch their criminals. One of the very good episodes is Tomorrow Man in the 3rd season which introduces computers and technological computer crimes. Computer crimes in the 70s? Yes.
Between the two, The Sweeney is better. The Professionals has a more national security angle whereas The Sweeney is down in the nitty gritty world of crime and informants.
Well he’s either pulling a bird or the geezers who planted the bomb didn’t miss a second time.
