Vista Or Not?

My old keyboard in Montreal, Canada. Taken on the 22nd of June 2006 with a Sony Cybershot DSC-P93 5.1MP camera.

Vista was released this week with some fanfare.

Am I thinking about upgrading soon?

Not really.

Maybe if I have the real DVDs, they are supposed to be pretty cheap here.

What am I actually thinking about?

Getting a MacBook.

Actually, since I got a Terabyte Workstation sitting at home, I don’t plan on getting a Mac there, but just a MacBook for when I am on the go.

I wouldn’t mind doing the Vista thing on my desktop at home.

But… Like most IT guys, I would rather wait a little bit. For now, I don’t plan on taking care of that before our return from Thailand at the end of February. Until then, I am too busy.

The media has been critizing Vista a lot, and has been quite vocal about it. Most machines will not have the necessary hardware to run it fully. I don’t think I have that problem, I have loads of HD space and RAM (2 GBs) and a 256MB graphics card, so I am not worried about running it on my desktop.

The age old saying:

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Comes to mind when I think about those issues.

  1. I don’t think I’ll go near vista until I get a new desktop. And I can’t see that happening until next year. Who knows, by then I might be indoctorinated into the cult of mac and get one of their high end machines instead.

  2. Your MacBook will brainwash you.

In the end, I wouldn’t mind getting a Mac desktop later on this year as a second computer probably at home.

Since my wife and I both take photography seriously and basically do not play games on our computers, a Mac would be great because I have heard time and time again how great they are for photos.

Watch all the bugs coming out of Vista in the next few weeks, and have a laugh at all the people who switched too early in the game.
