Primeval is a British science fiction drama television program produced by Impossible Pictures for ITV. The first episode was broadcast on 10th February 2007, and was renewed for a second series by ITV, which started on 12th January 2008.
The series follows a team of scientists who investigate anomalies in time and deal with the creatures that travel through. The team of five is led by Professor Nick Cutter, a palaeontologist determined to find his wife, who disappeared while investigating an anomaly in the Forest of Dean eight years previously.
As much as the premise sounds ridiculous, the series is actually quite good. Things really get interesting when the predator from the future arrives in our timeline and wreaks havoc. There is also the enigmatic Helen, Dr. Nick Cutter’s ex-wife, who travels between times. She’s trying to get to the future era, but spends most of her time in the Permian Era.
I actually like the second series a lot more than the new season of Torchwood, and that’s saying a lot. The actors are good in Primeval and they have good chemistry, something that is completely absent from Torchwood. To confound matters even further, Dr. Cutter changed something by traveling into the past. Claudia Brown is missing and no one knows of her. He might have just stepped into an alternate worldline. However, clues are shown that there might be other time traveling agents involved. This show is really getting good.
Most definitely, Primeval is way better that the current season of Torchwood. I’ve just watched the third episode of Torchwood and it was a big bore.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Stephen spots a trail and gets Cutter and Abby to follow him. Connor remains with the truck and the guns. He gets a text from Caroline. There is a bit of interference on the radio where Connor is sitting. Connor hears screaming. He takes the biggest gun and runs into the crowd. He starts shooting. He’s a madman. He’s shot at a Campbell who was wearing a mountain lion costume in the woods.
Abby tells Cutter that a man called West has a farm where there might be some big cats. He used to import them for zoos. He’s got something in his barn. Jenny manages to make West open up his barn. He says he’s got dogs in there. He’s got guard dogs. They leave. Cutter says that Jenny is being a flirt.
Connor is off guns again. The team is outfitted with night vision goggles to see the predator. Cutter thinks that it will be back. It’s killed already.

She doesn’t want to go home alone.
The photographer is a trainspotter. Jenny is able to get his SD card in exchange for him to look at some trains. Valerie keeps pressuring Stephen to get some information. Stephen doesn’t say anything. He drops her off. Cutter confirms that it’s a Smilodon.
The team is laying down some traps. The Smilodon comes to attack Cutter. He cowers in a hole while Abby tries to hit the cat with the crane. Cutter then distracts the animal by running away. Cutter noticed a hand in the hole they have dug.
It turns out that the body was ripped apart as well. However the body has been there for over a week. Someone dug a 10 feet deep trench to hide it. Looks like Valerie is involved, that’s why she has been acting so strange.
Jenny wants West to take the fall for an escaped lion. He doesn’t take the news well and pulls a shotgun on her. Stephen, Abby and Connor arrive just in time to save her.
Cutter discovers that the body’s Valerie’s boyfriend. The scene cuts to Valerie feeding the Smilodon. She’s tamed it, partially at least. From a photo that cutter found at Valerie’s place, it looks like she’s had the Smilodon for years.
Cutter is surprised by her. She’s got a gun pointed at him. She thinks that the Smilodon is a genetic experiment. She calls him to her and the animal appears. It’s there to kill Cutter. Cutter manages to get away from it. The tiger comes after him.
When he gets outside, Valerie runs out and tries to calm the tiger down. It doesn’t like it and mauls her. The team arrives and tranquilizes it.
Leek informs Cutter that the animal died in transport. It had a heart attack. Cutter wants to do a post-mortem. Leek tells him that the creature is being destroyed.
Caroline and Leek are working together.
