In Treatment Week 2 Gina Friday 7 PM S01E10 (HBO)

This is a surprising show on HBO. I was really dumbfounded when I discovered that there will be 43 episodes of In Treatment. Wow, 43. These are only half hour shows, or almost half hour shows, but still. That is just incredible.

In Treatment is based on the Israeli series Betipul. Gabriel Byrne plays Paul Weston, a psychologist trying to deal with his patients while going through some personal problems. Each show focuses on a different patient. Mondays feature Laura, an anestheologist infatuated with Paul. Tuesdays feature Alex, an ex-fighter pilot traumatized by events that happened a few years ago. Wednesdays feature Sophie, a suicidal teenage gymnast with Olympic aspirations. Thursdays feature Jake and Amy, a couple in couple’s counseling. Fridays feature Gina, Paul’s own therapist and mentor that he stopped seeing 8 years ago for some reason.

I’ve always loved psychology. This show really feeds that need. The sessions are almost verbatim of what would happen in a real session. This show is about characters, not actions. It’s a very smart show and I am also very surprised that Marky Mark is the executive producer. Marky Mark has had success with Entourage so it makes sense that he decided to try out other projects.

This is a great show. I really liked it. I find that it’s best to watch it a few episodes at a time. I recommend this show.

In this session, Paul needs to talk about Kate and her infidelity. He can’t really handle this. He’s been thinking about Laura. He wouldn’t mind having an affair with her, but she’s a patient. He can’t cross that line. Gina senses this and wants to talk more about Laura. However Paul needs to talk about Kate. His family is disintegrating.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

* * * * *

After yesterday’s blowout and revelations by Kate, Paul needs to talk to someone. He can’t talk with his wife. He goes to his therapy session with Gina. He tells her about his week.

Paul says that it’s all going to hell. The most important thing is that Kate told him about her affair. He seems lost. He looks sick. He’s coughing and blowing his nose.

Paul tells Gina that Kate gave him graphic details about her affair. Paul thinks that Kate is in her own little porno film. Gina says that he knew what was going on. Paul is taking some cold medication.

Paul tells her about Amy’s miscarriage. His recollection of events is tinged with his personal point of view.

Paul talks about how Kate is trying to reclaim the office. He won’t let her. She’s jealous of what goes on there. He says that before he used to share things about his sessions with his family, years ago. He doesn’t do this anymore.

Gina keeps coming back to the erotic transference that she sees in Laura. He tells her about Laura’s attempt to enter his house to use the bathroom. He says that he panicked. She asks him if anything else made him panic. He tells her about Sophie’s incident about needing her clothes changed. He didn’t panic then.

Part of him wanted Laura to go through the door. He tells her that it’s flattering, but he told her that nothing could happen. Gina tells Paul that he should consider transferring Laura to another therapist. Gina admits that she thought that Paul was already having an affair with Laura last week.

Paul says that if it wasn’t for Kate cheating on him. Paul is still upset at her crack last week about him emulating his father having an affair with a patient.

Paul says that she was in her father’s situation as well in the past. He referred a patient to her named Charlie and she almost had an affair with him. She ran off to England. Paul says that her novel is probably about this. Paul says that Charlie must have tried to contact her over the years. She says a few letters, but she didn’t answer. Paul tells her that Charlie died from prostate cancer a few months ago. Gina couldn’t go to another funeral after David’s.

Charlie is the friend he talked about to one of his patients. Paul says that he was surprised that he kept her as his supervisor when he left. He never got over Gina. Paul was disillusioned with her.

We don’t tell people how to run their lives.
Paul to Gina.

Paul takes another pill. He’s obviously attracted to Laura, but there is no question in his mind that he isn’t going to do anything with her.
