In Treatment Week 2 Jake and Amy Thursday 5PM S01E09 (HBO)

This is a surprising show on HBO. I was really dumbfounded when I discovered that there will be 43 episodes of In Treatment. Wow, 43. These are only half hour shows, or almost half hour shows, but still. That is just incredible.

In Treatment is based on the Israeli series Betipul. Gabriel Byrne plays Paul Weston, a psychologist trying to deal with his patients while going through some personal problems. Each show focuses on a different patient. Mondays feature Laura, an anestheologist infatuated with Paul. Tuesdays feature Alex, an ex-fighter pilot traumatized by events that happened a few years ago. Wednesdays feature Sophie, a suicidal teenage gymnast with Olympic aspirations. Thursdays feature Jake and Amy, a couple in couple’s counseling. Fridays feature Gina, Paul’s own therapist and mentor that he stopped seeing 8 years ago for some reason.

I’ve always loved psychology. This show really feeds that need. The sessions are almost verbatim of what would happen in a real session. This show is about characters, not actions. It’s a very smart show and I am also very surprised that Marky Mark is the executive producer. Marky Mark has had success with Entourage so it makes sense that he decided to try out other projects.

This is a great show. I really liked it. I find that it’s best to watch it a few episodes at a time. I recommend this show.

In this session, Amy has a miscarriage and needs to be brought to the hospital. The rest of the episode concentrates on the marital problems that Paul has with his wife Kate. Kate tells him that she is having an affair. She’s been having an affair for months. She doesn’t plan on stopping it. Paul doesn’t even tell her to stop.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Amy is smoking outside of Paul’s therapy room. She only has the time to get one puff before Jake comes by. They get touchy feely on Paul’s porch.

Amy tells Paul that she decided to wait on the examination with Dr. Cornreich. They are both very positive. Jake is laughing during the session. Amy tells Paul that she took a day off.

Jake wants to stop the sessions. He has talked with Amy about this and they decided. Paul tells him that it’s too soon. Amy says that she might want to continue the therapy. Amy wants to pursue her career as well. She doesn’t know if she will be able to become pregnant again. It looks like Amy becomes ill and goes to the bathroom. Jake knows that something is up. He takes goes into the bathroom and takes his wife to the hospital. Paul notices a blood stain on his couch.

Paul asks his wife Kate how to get the blood stain out of his couch. He describes the situation to Kate. Kate says that shampoo gets out blood. She’ll try out hydrogen peroxide first. Kate comments that he should make this room a bit nicer, with a new couch. She says that she is jealous of it. Paul tells Kate that he went back to see Gina last week.

Kate tells him that he ignores her and he doesn’t realize what Max is going through. Max doesn’t have any friends. Max is home all day. Kate says that Max tells him that he isn’t having a good time at school. Max hates school. He hates the teachers. He’s bored at school. Max told her that he doesn’t want his mom to tell Paul about this. This was the most important thing or Max. Kate feels like she’s always second best to what happens in his office. She asks him when did he become such an asshole. She calls him an old anaemic man. At least that is how he is with the kids and her. However he has a lot of energy for his patients.

Paul says that he didn’t notice. He’ll talk with Max. Paul asks about Rosie. Kate tells him that he should talk to Rosie about what she does at the youth center.

Kate asks him if she disgusts him. Paul says that she’s being ridiculous. Kate says that she is seeing someone. Paul wants to know who she is seeing. Kate says that he’s divorced and has a son. He runs an employment agency. Paul is losing his temper. He’s screaming at her. She’s having an affair. She says that she can’t stop thinking about the way that he touches her and looks at her.

Paul says that whatever he did, it wasn’t intentional. She made a deliberate choice to betray him and the kids. Kate is crying. Paul says that she ruined any chance of saving their marriage. What made is worse is that Paul didn’t notice it at all.

Paul asks if it is over. Kate says that it’s up to him. Paul asks her to leave. Paul’s next patient arrives. He goes into his therapy mode.
