Lost is a United States serial drama television series that follows the lives of plane crash survivors on a mysterious tropical island, after a passenger jet flying between Sydney, Australia and Los Angeles, United States crashes somewhere in the South Pacific. Each episode typically features a primary storyline on the island as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character’s life. The show was created by Damon Lindelof, J. J. Abrams and Jeffrey Lieber, and is filmed primarily on location in Oahu, Hawaii. The pilot episode was first broadcast on September 22, 2004. Since then, three seasons have aired. The show is produced by ABC Studios, Bad Robot Productions and Grass Skirt Productions and airs on the ABC Network in the United States. Its incidental music is composed by Michael Giacchino. The current executive producers are Abrams, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, Jack Bender and Carlton Cuse. Because of its large ensemble cast and the cost of filming in Hawaii, the series is one of the most expensive on television.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
This episode is Ben’s story after the island. Well actually, it tells his story on what he did during a time off-island. It happens in October 2005. The current storyline takes place in December 2004. It also explains how Sayid got involved with Ben. It was shown in episode 3, The Economist, that Sayid was working as Ben’s assassin. We didn’t find out why he was doing this after getting off the island. This episode explains this in part.
The show is divided in three storylines. One takes place on the beach. Another takes place with Ben at the Barracks. The last one centers on Ben’s future action following an excursion off-island.
Rousseau and Carl aren’t mentioned. Carl is probably dead. He was shot in the last episode. I’m not sure that Rousseau is dead. We learn that the soldiers are the security team from the boat. They work for Charles Widmore and have come for Ben.
In the Barracks, Ben gets a message. It’s from Alex. She triggered a panic button at the fence, where she was obligated to let the soldiers through. Ben is immediately up in arms to get ready for an assault. Sawyer goes out to get Claire to safety. Hugo and Locke barricade themselves in.
Needless to say, a lot happens. When Ben doesn’t surrender to the soldiers’ demands, they kill Alex. Ben immediately disappears and returns, having summoned the black smoke monster. The black smoke monster goes after the soldiers. Nothing is explained about it. It rumbles and grumbles, just like lightning and thunder and coils itself around them. It’s definitely intelligent in some manner.
Sawyer, Claire and Aaron head back to the beach. Ben, Hugo and Locke are going to see Jacob, who supposedly can answer Locke’s questions about the beast and many more things.
At the beach, Bernard is able to uncover that Faraday and Charlotte were lying to them all along. They never came to save the Losties. They came for different reasons. Jack is also sick. He’s got some stomach virus. It’s not looking good for him.
In the future, Ben wakes up in the Sahara Desert. He searches for Sayid after having seen him on TV. Sayid’s wife Nadia was killed in LA and he is burying her in Tikrit. Ben spies one of Widmore’s men at the scene. He tells Sayid and they ambush him. Sayid kills him after being convinced by Ben that he’s the one that killed his wife. With Ben, it’s always a challenge to see what is the truth. Ben mingles the truth with lies so easily, that it’s hard to tell what the whole thing was really about.
His objective in getting to Tikrit was to recruit Sayid to his cause by having him believe that Charles Widmore was responsible for the death of Nadia. Sayid is blinded by rage and agrees to be Ben’s killer. He wants Widmore’s people dead as well. This leads him to all over the world to kill the people on Ben’s list.
Ben pays a visit to Widmore in London. He tells him that he will kill Penny for Widmore having had his daughter Alex killed. He was the one who broke the rules. Ben says that he can’t kill Widmore. I wonder why? There must be some accords that were passed beforehand in the wars on the island.
Desmond isn’t going to be happy when he finds this out.
This was another excellent episode of Lost. Full of answers and questions. More needs to be said on the black smoke creature, since it hasn’t been explained at all since we have seen it. What is it exactly? The will of the island personified?

In the last episode, Carl and Rousseau were shot and apparently killed. Alex stood up and identified herself as Ben’s daughter.
Kate is on the beach cleaning up. Jack takes some pills. Kate tells him that he looks terrible. He’s taking some antibiotics. He’s got some sort of stomach bugs. Bernard and Vincent find a man in the water. It’s someone from the boat. It’s the doctor. His throat was cut.
Hugo and Sawyer are talking. Hugo thinks that they are all going to die. They are playing Risk.
Alex was taken by some soldiers. They want Alex to turn the fence off. She only complies when they put a gun to her head. At the barracks in Locke’s place, a phone rings. It’s a recording that says Code 14J. They go see Ben. Ben immediately takes out some guns. He tells them that they are here.
Ben wakes up in the Sahara Desert. He throws up. Some riders on horseback come to see him. They look like Mujahedeen. Ben pretends like he’s an innocent lost white guy, and then proceeds to kill them both in seconds.
Ben says that Code 14J was a panic code. That means that one of his people was captured near the fence. It’s time for them to get out of here. Ben urges Locke to stay close to him, it’s the only way of staying safe.
Faraday and Charlotte pretend that they know nothing about the doctor’s death. Faraday says that when is a relative term. Bernard wants Faraday to jury rig the broken sat phone to work like a telegram. Jack wants to talk with Bernard.
Ben is busy barricading himself in with Locke and Hugo. The attack starts. Three of the losties at the Barracks are immediately killed when it starts. Sawyer can’t find Claire. She’s not at her house. The opposing force uses automatic weapons and grenades. They blow up Claire’s house while Sawyer makes a run towards it.
Ben is in Tozeur, Tunisia. He checks into a hotel with the name Dean Moriarty. It’s October 24th 2005. This means that it’s in the future. This episode takes place on December 27th 2004. Ben sees a report on the television. He sees Sayid saying that he just wants to bury his wife in peace.
In the present, Ben says that the opposing force is trying to scare him into surrendering. There is only one person that can save them and that’s Jacob. John doesn’t know where the cabin is. Ben says that Hugo does.
Sawyer finds Claire in the rubble. She’s alive. Hurley is acting like an idiot and walking around the front door with Aaron. Hurley wants to get Sawyer and Claire back inside, but the door is barricaded. Hurley shatter a window to get in. A few moments later, the doorbell rings. It’s Miles. He’s got a radio with him. He was freed by the others.
Ben arrives somewhere else. He’s trying to find Sayid. He’s got a gigantic telephoto lens and is surveilling Sayid’s wife’s funeral. Sayid spots him on the rooftop. Ben is trying to get away. Sayid corners him. Ben says that he is here to find the man who murdered his wife. Ben says that he took Desmond’s boat. He took a charter to Fiji. Ben says that Ishmael Bakhia is one of Charles Widmore’s men was watching the funeral. He was last seen where Nadia was killed in LA. They murdered Sayid’s wife.
Miles says that there are maybe six people. They came from the boat. They came from there to escort Ben back. They’ve got Alex as a hostage. Ben agrees to talk with him. Martin Keamy wants to talk with Ben. He’s an employee of Charles Widmore. Ben knows a lot about Keamy. He’s a merc who worked in Uganda. They bring out Alex. Keamy threatens her with a gun. Keamy gives the walkie-talkie to Alex, who is pleading for her life. Ben says that Alex isn’t his daughter. He stole her from an insane woman. While Ben is trying to justify his stance, Keamy shoots Alex in the head. She slumps on the ground.
The only thing that Ben can say is that “He changed the rules”. Ben leaves into a panic room. It has a secret exit into some tunnels. Ben escapes from the house. The others react too slow to stop him.
In the future, Ben is surveilling Ishmael, who easily ambushes him. Ben wanted to get captured. He’s got a message for Widmore. Before he can tell him the message, Sayid shoots Ishmael. He kills him with the initial shot, but empties his magazine into the body.
This is how Sayid became Ben’s assassin. He wants to help to take Widmore down. Ben had this planned. As he turns away, he leaves smirking.
In the present, Ben comes back into the house. He tells them when he gives the order, he wants them all to run toward the tree line. The house starts to rumble. The smoke beast is back. Ben sees it from the window. It rumbles and grumbles. It attacks Widmore’s men. Ben orders the others outside. They watch as coils and coils of animated black smoke surround the location of the enemies. As they watch on with incredulity, Ben says goodbye to his daughter. They can’t believe what they are seeing. The others run away. Ben tells Locke to head for the creek. The beast is all thunder and lighting.
They black smoke reminds me of a the Lions And Tigers And Bears from the Rise of Endymion by Dan Simmons. They are the mysterious aliens that Aenea is in contact with through the Void That Binds.
At the beach, Faraday has a signal through the improvised telegraph. Dan obviously lies. He is flat caught out by Bernard who knows Morse code. The reply from the boat was that the doctor was fine. Faraday admits that they were never going to take the survivors off the island. Jack’s still got his stomach flu. It looks bad.
Ben joins the others at the creek. Locke confronts him about the smoke monster. Jacob knows about the monster. Ben says that he can ask Jacob when they find him. Sawyer, Miles and Claire want to head back to the beach. Hugo is about to leave. Sawyer doesn’t want to leave Hugo. Locke wants Hugo to show them were the cabin is. They both had guns pulled out. Hugo calms the situation down.
In the future, Ben is in London, England. He goes to the penthouse suite. He’s here to see Mr. Charles Widmore. He’s been sleeping with a bottle of scotch next to his bed. Ben says that he can’t kill Widmore. He’s here because he murdered his daughter. Widmore says that Ben killed her. Widmore says that everything that he has he took from him. Ben says that he is here to kill Penny, Widmore’s daughter.
Widmore says that he’ll never find her. Widmore says that the island is his. It’s always been his. He’ll find it. Ben says that he’ll never find it. Widmore changed the rules when he killed Alex. It’s time for Ben to pay back the favour.
Ben walks away.
