Doctor Who is a long-running, award-winning British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious alien time-traveller known as “the Doctor” who travels in his space and time-ship, the TARDIS, which appears from the exterior to be a blue police phone box. With his companions, he explores time and space, solving problems and righting wrongs.
The show’s lead character is currently portrayed by David Tennant. A Christmas special co-starring Kylie Minogue aired in December 2007, and the fourth series started on 5 April 2008. For that series, Catherine Tate will reprise her role of Donna Noble, from the 2006 Christmas special, as the Doctor’s latest companion. Midway through the series, Freema Agyeman will also return to her role of Martha Jones, following a multi-episode guest appearance in the Doctor Who spin-off series, Torchwood. John Barrowman will continue his role as Captain Jack Harkness, and Billie Piper will return as Rose Tyler for three episodes. Elisabeth Sladen is also set to return as Sarah Jane Smith in a cameo role.
After a 2008 Christmas special and three further specials starring David Tennant, scheduled to air in 2009, Doctor Who is planned to return in 2010 for a fifth full length series.
The Doctor is a long lived alien from the planet Gallifrey. He’s a Time Lord and travels through time thanks to his aging time capsule the Tardis. David Tennant is the tenth Doctor. My favorite has always been Tom Baker as the fourth Doctor. The Doctor periodically regenerates. When he does so, he changes outward appearance which let the producers change actors easily. All Time Lords regenerate 13 times. The Doctor’s nemesis is the Master, a renegade Time Lord who found a way around this limit. Other enemies include the Black Guardian, the Daleks and the Cybermen.
During the previous serials, before 2005, Gallifrey was alive and well. It appears that for the new series, the Doctor is the only survivor of the last great Time War between the Dalek Empire and the Time Lords.
The Doctor and Donna Noble in the library, which houses all of the books of humanity in the 51st century. It takes over a whole planet. More than a few mysteries are put forth to the Doctor.
Mainly, that all of the inhabitants and visitors to the Library have disappeared. It’s empty. The Doctor meets a friend in Professor River Song, who knows the Doctor in one of his later incarnations. Actually, he met her while he was still in this regeneration. But just like the Doctor, as soon as Song realizes that the Doctor she meets isn’t the right Doctor, she doesn’t reveal much about what happened between them. Song must have traveled with the Doctor, since she knows about Donna Noble and the TARDIS.
The Vashta Nerada are loose on the planet and are eating up people. They are the main enemy. The Doctor says that there are Vashta Nerada on all planets, but there are too many here. The Vashta Nerada inhabit the shadows. They consume a few people on the expedition and take over a space suit. The Doctor mentions that Donna and him are protected in some fashion, probably by the TARDIS.
There is also a little girl who dreams of the library. She is in 20th century Earth, yet she manifests in the Library in the 51st century in a surveillance camera. The Doctor is able to communicate with her. She is told by her psychologist that the world of the Library is real. The one she thinks is real is just a dream.
It turns out that the little girl is actually Cal, the main computer. She has been able to save all of the people. She saved them in herself. Dr. Moon is actually a Doctor Moon, an artificial satellite that checks for viruses and maintains the computer.
The Doctor finally trusts Song when she whispers his name to him. He is able to find out that the Vashta Nerada inhabit the leaves of all the books. He is given time to get the people out thanks to his reputation. All of the people are saved, including Donna, but River Song had to sacrifice her life in order to accomplish this. The Doctor was going to do it, but she knocked him out and took his place.
Later the Doctor realizes why he gave her his sonic screwdriver. It housed a way to save the ghost of River Song. He downloads it into Cal and she lives on as a ghost in the machine.
This was another great episode. This is a great episode for the two part episode arc. My guess is that the next three episodes will involve Rose Tyler in some fashion. Although the previews make it seem that the next episode is just a filler episode until the series finale.
During the other serials, the Timelords were alive and well. The Daleks and the Time Lors annihilated themselves during the last great Time War. The Doctor fought in this war and is the only survivor of his race.
Rose Tyler was actually seen at the end of the first episode of this season. Rose was the new Doctor’s first companion back in 2005. She stayed for two seasons before being sucked into another universe. She was seen once again in this episode, on the screen of the TARDIS when Donna was looking at the Doctor’s message to the Sontarans.
There, she finds herself trapped on the parallel Earth albeit reunited with Jackie, Mickey and the alternate Pete Tyler. Later, the Doctor manages to project his image through the last crack between the universes, sharing a tearful farewell with her. He informs Rose that she is presumed dead in the aftermath of the invasion, thus verifying Rose’s soliloquy at the start of the episode “This is the story of how I died”. Rose in turn mentions working with that parallel Earth’s (non secret) version of the Torchwood Institute due to her experience with aliens. Finally, Rose tells him she loves him, even though they denied it many times during the course of their time together. The Doctor begins to reply, getting as far as “If it’s my last chance to say it…Rose Tyler–” before the connection fails.
Rose is back for three episodes this season.
It’s incredible how entertaining these new Doctor Who episodes. Torchwood isn’t anywhere near as entertaining. David Tennant really knows how to portray his character well.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Professor River Song uses her blaster to distract the suit filled with Vashta Nerada.
The girl sees them on the TV. She switches channels and comes to another scene. It’s an ambulance which has Donna Noble inside. The girl recognizes her. Dr. Moon comes to see her. He says that he has been treating her for the last 2 years.
The perspective shifts to Donna. She gets married to Lee Mackavoy. It’s been seven years and she has two children. The Doctor is trying to communicate with her. Dr. Moon makes her forget.
The Doctor has trouble with his sonic screwdriver. River lends him hers. River says that she will prove to him that she knows him. She whispers something to his ear. It’s very short. After this, the Doctor says that they are good. It must have been his name, or something like this.
One of the people in the expedition says that the interference might be coming from the moon. The moon is a doctor moon, a virus checker. It supports and maintains the main computer in the core of the planet. Someone is alive and communicating with it. He fiddles with the screwdriver and gets an image of Donna.
Another person has two shadows. The Doctor notices that there are six people in the room, when there should only be five.
The girl keeps shifting between Donna and what’s happening at the library. Donna is looking for Dr. Moon. He just disappeared. She sees something strange leaving her garden. The strange person leaves her a message. It says that the world is wrong. She wants to meet Donna tomorrow.
She meets the mysterious woman. She says that she met before in the library. She’s what is left of Miss Evangelista. She says that time flows differently here.
The Doctor tries to reason with the Vashta Nerada. He wants to know why they came to the library to hunt. They usually hunt in forests. They did not come here.
We come from here. We hatched here. These are our forests.
The Doctor thinks that they hatched in the books. They came from the books. The Doctor turns around and finds that Dave is dead as well. The Doctor escapes through the floor. The girl is watching this on the TV. She finds him entertaining.
Evangelista tries to tell Donna that she came here to show her the lies. Evangelista says that they are all dead. All of the children are the same. Donna rips her veil away and finds that Evangelista has got a very twisted face. It’s all scrunched up.
River is worried about the Doctor. He’s not the same as her Doctor. She’s getting annoying.
The Doctor is asked about what Song told him in his ear. The Doctor realizes that it had something to do with the word “safe”.
Evangelista says that the children are all the same because they are in cyberspace.
The Doctor says that they are all of the people were sent into the computer and it saved them. It saved 4022 people to the HD. Evangelista says that she has be stored in the library.
Evangelista says that her intellect has improved vastly, but there was a transcription error in her face. There is a word, Cal.
The girl freaks out and switches off her dad.
In the library, they see that the auto-destruct has been initiated.
Donna sees that the sky has become red.
Dr. Moon tries to calm the girl, but she switches him off. He said that she saved all those people. She needed to calm down. The girl is the library computer.
They need to save Cal, at the core of the planet.
Donna’s fake kids disappear.
The Doctor arrives at the data core. Lux says that the computer is dreaming. It’s asleep. He pushes a button. It’s the little girl. She’s the computer. She’s Cal. She’s Charlotte Abigail Lux. Lux says that she was dying. So they built her a library and hooked her into it. She could dream of all the books that were stored inside of her.
The Doctor plans on saving the girl. Denita has been eaten. The Vashta Nerada want their forests. They want their meat. The Doctor wants to save them all. They want to eat him. He tells them that he is the Doctor. They should look him up. As they do, they retreat the shadows back into them. They give him one day. River Song comes back and knocks him out.
She plans on plugging herself into the library. The Doctor knew that the whole time he knew that she would die. The Doctor tells her that there would be only one reason why he would tell her his name. She plugs herself in and says spoilers.
All of the people who were saved 100 years ago appear back in the library.
The Doctor and Donna leave the improved sonic screwdriver and River Song’s diary in the library. He runs back to get the screwdriver. He sees that he saved River Song in the screwdriver. He runs to the gravity lift and jumps down to save her pattern.
The signal subsists just long enough to save River. He downloads her into Cal.
