The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.
She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers.
Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.
Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.
The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009.

After Clay’s heart attack, Brenda’s parents are still in town and they are slowly driving Brenda bonkers. She has taken a day off, but has to head back into the office when a body is found in a trunk. Sanchez is still on light duty after refusing to talk with someone from Behavioral Sciences.
Oddly enough, this episode involves an obvious tranny. He was easy to spot, the man-hands and the Adam’s apple are a dead giveaway. Also, his features were too angular to be those of a woman. Anyway, this tranny says that he’s actually an illusionist. The Chief has to find a way to charge him, but it’s not going to be easy. Fritzi gives her a great idea.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The squad is called to their next case. A body was found stuffed in a trunk. The diamond dealer stole $3 million in diamonds. The body has been decomposing for a while. Flynn updates the Chief. She’s taken a personal day. They haven’t found the diamonds yet. They try to tow the truck, but it rolls off the truck and smashes against an electrical pole. A transformer crashes onto the trunk. The DB has probably been smashed to pieces.
After stealing the diamonds from his store, he went missing. The night before Adams’ wife reported him missing, her credit card was used to purchase a lot of junk food. They have footage of someone with Adams in his car ordering the food.
Brenda’s parents are still in town. He almost died last week. She thinks that they will stay until after the wedding, in three weeks. Adams’ wife has also a charge for some plane tickets to Antwerp, which is a great place to unload diamonds. The Chief is interviewing Mrs. Adams. She joined a website called Quiet Affairs. She joined four months ago. Her boyfriend was in the car with her husband. That’s what the Chief suspects. There was a charge for not just one plane ticket, but three. Mrs. Adams thinks that Phil was leaving her. Adams had to take two seats when he flies. Phil was the one who met the boy. He was the one who joined Quiet Affairs. His friend is Keith Reyes.
The Chief finds out that Sanchez wasn’t at his desk, but in the field. She dupes them easily into revealing what was going on. They search Reyes house. There is a woman there. She looks like a tranny. The tranny tries to escape. The Chief doesn’t let her go that easily and books her for trying to drive without a license. Sanchez finds her attractive. He doesn’t know. He actually kisses her. Later, he tells the Chief that she doesn’t speak Spanish well enough. Tao has processed her fingerprints and knows that she is really Reyes. He brings the info to the Chief, who rips off the wig. The whole squad is shocked. Sanchez runs off to therapy.
Reyes says that Phil got into the trunk by himself. It was part of the surprise. They were going to Mexico. Reyes says that he got into the trunk and freaked out. He drove back to LA. Reyes says that he’s an illusionist and works on a cruise ship. Pope talks to the Chief. The Chief doesn’t have much to go on. Since Adams got into the trunk by himself, this isn’t a case of murder. No crime has been committed. She can’t arrest him for anything. She needs to find the diamonds. The Chief thinks that Reyes is connected to the diamonds, but she hasn’t got any proof.
Willy Rae tells Clay and Brenda that she is leaving tomorrow on their cruise. While Brenda tries on her wedding dress, she has an idea. She knows where Reyes has hidden the diamonds. On her dress. Sanchez was cleared by behavioural sciences to go back on full active duty. The Chief finds the diamonds. Reyes doesn’t say much while he is in custody once more. He sticks to his story. But like most perps, he doesn’t have a lawyer with him. Pope agrees that they have nothing on him. Reyes says that his best trick is yet to come. Since she can’t charge him, tomorrow he’ll walk out and disappear.
Fritzi tells Brenda that magicians have a tendency of repeating their tricks over and over again. Since they do this, there might be a pattern. He hands Brenda a news clipping of a fattie bank manager killed a while ago. $2 million was missing. The FBI has Reyes on CCTV. With a pattern, you create intent. With intent, you get murder in the first. The Chief releases Reyes to the FBI and to Tucson Arizona PD.
