The Mentalist Redwood S01E05 (CBS)

The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.

Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.

Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Some girls went missing. Their car was found in a state park with signs of a struggle. A big SUV was near the car. A cute bloodhound is around. I wouldn’t mind getting a bloodhound. I’ve always loved them. A body was found under the car thanks to Jane. It’s Cara Palmer. Nicole is still missing.

The Sheriff says that Nicole has been in trouble before. Her mom died when she was 7. Her dad was a drug user. Some of the searchers think that Nicole was to blame for the death of Cara. The Sheriff likes Jane. He’s a humanizing presence.

Cara’s father doesn’t think that Nicole killer his daughter. Van Pelt and Rigsby are questioning the parents. Nicole was engaged to Jason O’Toole, a lumberjack who likes to gamble. Cara didn’t like him. She didn’t approve. She thought that he wasn’t trustworthy. Nicole was in love. Cara didn’t have a boyfriend. She had high standards.

The trail goes cold and the dog doesn’t know where to go. Jane knows that Nicole is either a captive or dead. Jane questions the Sheriff and tells him that the killer might be on the search party. Jane wants to question them. The Sheriff says that he would vouch for most of them.

Cho and Rigsby question Jason. He’s kind of got an alibi. Jane is making the search party raise their hands. His cockamamie questions don’t work. They find a trace of Nicole at a rest stop. She had a knife and feasting on food. She was in some kind of a psychotic state.

Nicole had the murder weapon in her hands. The Sheriff wants to charge her, but Agent Lisbon wants to have the full story from Nicole. She doesn’t remember much. She doesn’t know that Cara is dead. Jane tells her that she is dead, stabbed to death. With a firm voice, Jane makes her remember what happened. On the way home, they stopped because Nicole was sick. There was a man there. She can hear a loud rushing sound like water. She says that she can’t remember. Jane says that Nicole’s memory is blocked because she witnessed something so terrible.

Jane says that Nicole was covered in blood. It was raining hard for hours. She was indoors somewhere. Lisbon calls Rigsby and gets him onto checking storage units and cabins. Jane tells the Sheriff that he needs to make sure that no one enters to see Nicole. She’s in danger.

From the footage at the engagement party, Jane surmises that Jason was torn between Cara and Nicole. They see a creepy guy wearing an Earthly Pure hat in the video. Cara had the same cosmetics in her car. They match it to Rulan Farnes, a truck driver for Earthly Pure cosmetics.

Jane goes back to see Nicole. The officers stop Jason from coming to see Nicole. She’s created a bond with Jane. She was scared when she heard Jason arrive. Jane hears a patient play Eine Kleine Nachtmusik from Mozart. It reminds him of his dead family.

Farnes puts up a fight when Cho and Rigsby try to question him. Jane takes Cara’s iPod from evidence. He gave Cara a lot of stuff. He expected sexual favours from Cara. He says that he got nothing at all. Jane asks Farnes how heavy he is. Farnes replies that he’s 245lbs. Farnes has got no alibi. Jane thinks that Farnes is not guilty. There is more to Cara than what they’ve been told. Lisbon tells Jane to put back Cara’s MP3 player, but he doesn’t. They release Rulan and Lisbon/Rigsby follow him to the town bar. Lisbon hears the flow of traffic and thinks that the cabin must be on the other side of town. The sound of traffic sounds like water rushing.

Jane is planning on getting Nicole out of the hospital. It wasn’t a challenge. He brings her to the woods. He wants to jog her memory. Cara told her a secret. She said that Nicole shouldn’t marry Jason because Cara was sleeping with him behind Nicole’s back.

Nicole remembers what happened. A man assaulted Cara and killed her. Nicole was carried away into a pickup truck. It was a diesel truck. It was a short drive to an old shed. It was small, dark, cold and dusty. She tried to get out and the ranger was there. He tried to rape her, but she fought and got away. He phones Lisbon. Lisbon doesn’t know that she’s with the killer. Nicole tells Lisbon that the killer smells of pineapples. Lisbon realizes that the ranger is the killer.

She tells Kyle to stay calm. He says that he didn’t want Nicole marrying Jason he wasn’t any good for her. They start shooting at each other. Lisbon called for help. Jane is still on the line. Jane tells her to use the phone as a diversion. They are able to get Kyle easily after that.

Nicole thanks Jane for believing in her. Nicole goes with Cara’s parents.
