The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-experessions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.
Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.
Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

In Northern Napa County, CA, the feds show up found a girl in a ditch. She was suffocated. Jane says that she is a local. The killer smothered her by mistake. She made too much noise. The abductor planned on raping her in private. It went wrong and she was killed. He dumped her in a place only a local would know.
The cops arrive at the O’Keefe place. They tell them that Melanie was found dead. She waitresses at a local restaurant. She never came home. The parents say that she wasn’t involved with any boys. She took a purity pledge in 9th grade.
Jane goes inside and talks with the younger brother. He notices that she took down some posters. She’s got some photos and things pasted on her ceiling in the form of a letter. It’s a ‘K’ or an ‘H’. Jane tells Lisbon that she had a lover. His first name starts with an H. The sheriff says that he noticed a car leaving fast.
Jane and Lisbon interview the restaurant owners. It’s not a local diner, the food there actually looks pretty good. She left the restaurant at 11:25PM. They interview one of the other waitresses. She was in the picture on the victim’s ceiling. She denies knowing anything. Jane wants a few minutes alone with her. Jane tries to hypnotize her. He surmises that Raquelle’s got a very low threshold. In her locker, they find her purity ring and a message saying ‘sorry’. Jane convenes the staff. When Jane says that Cho is the chief graphologist of the bureau, Randall faints. He faints because Jane tells them that they will all submit their handwriting to Cho. The killer will be found out this way. Randall denies killing her.
Last night, he waited for her in the parking lot. He made a pass at her. He tried to kiss her and she kneed her in the groin. The next day, he wrote the note. Van Pelt reports on her findings. The tape was used in a rape case. She was a redhead as well. Lisbon wants to focus on the boyfriend angle. Jane wants to investigate the
Raquelle says that Melanie had a thing with Hector Ramirez, her cousin. She was meeting him that night. She is afraid of her cousin, he’s had people killed for less. That’s why she didn’t say anything. He runs drugs. Raquelle was obviously hypnotised. Lisbon tells Cho off for letting Jane do this.
Jane is posted away from the scene, near an ice cream shop. Ramirez makes it near him, but gets tackled by Lisbon. He was supposed to meet her that night at 11:30PM. He was a few minutes late. She was a no-show. He was angry and left. Jane thinks that he’s telling the truth.
Frankie the brother shows up at the precinct. Jane calls Van Pelt. He wants her to check the motels within a 10 mile radius. Frankie’s got an axe in his bag, to kill Hector with. Jane tells him about how Red John killed his family to teach him a lesson. Van Pelt calls about a place that had a cancellation. He wore a bad disguise. He rents the room monthly. He’s been there recently.
They found blood in Hector’s car. He admits to hit her when she was disrespectful. She bled a bit from her nose. They go the motel. Jane switches on the TV. It’s a live feed of Van Pelt. She’s hot and wearing a short red dress. Jane says that one of the twenty people from the restaurant killed Melanie. There wasn’t enough time for anyone else to do this. They are in his motel room. He will bring back his victim here. Van Pelt slaps him and he does his little spiel. Rigsby leaves. Van Pelt leaves alone. She walks awkwardly on the road. The sheriff accosts her. The team tells her to keep rolling. The sheriff offers to drive her to the road. Rigsby blows the op. He arrives and pushes the sheriff away. Jane thinks that the chef Malcolm is the killer. He uses too much butter and is a gluttonous baby. He sees what he wants and takes it. While she’s out of the room, the restaurant owners arrive with a girl. They are both there. They are getting ready to kill the girl. They’ve got a gun and a knife. They have an argument. Lisbon bursts in and has to shoot them both.
That was strange and powerful.
