The Dubai Con-Job

“The thing you have to understand about Dubai is – nothing is what it seems,” Karen says at last. “Nothing. This isn’t a city, it’s a con-job. They lure you in telling you it’s one thing – a modern kind of place – but beneath the surface it’s a medieval dictatorship.”: “In Saudi, it’s hard to be straight when you’re young. The women are shut away so everyone has gay sex. But they only want to have sex with boys – 15- to 21-year-olds. I’m 27, so I’m too old now. I need to find real gays, so this is the best place. All Arab gays want to live in Dubai.”

  1. It sounds as if the article you are quoting was plagiarized from interviews that The Atlantic did on the subject about one-and-a-half-years-ago. Now that would be worthy of research as well. The original Atlantic article (which I read which diligently, and remember quite well, too) was good.

  2. Seriously, though, the article I read in the Atlantic said the same thing about being gay in Saudi Arabia. It seems like a bizarre and terrible cultural situation, where everybody has to lie about reality, and no one is exempt from this situation – and yet it is paradoxically almost easier to be gay there. I wouldn’t want to be raised there, that’s for sure!

  3. This is a great article. I saved in PDF form to use in classes. Dubai has always been portrayed as this great place to be and to make lots of money, but honestly, I definitely don’t want to work there.
