Lost is a United States serial drama television series that follows the lives of plane crash survivors on a mysterious tropical island, after a passenger jet flying between Sydney, Australia and Los Angeles, United States crashes somewhere in the South Pacific. Each episode typically features a primary storyline on the island as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character’s life. The show was created by Damon Lindelof, J. J. Abrams and Jeffrey Lieber, and is filmed primarily on location in Oahu, Hawaii. The pilot episode was first broadcast on September 22, 2004. Since then, three seasons have aired. The show is produced by ABC Studios, Bad Robot Productions and Grass Skirt Productions and airs on the ABC Network in the United States. Its incidental music is composed by Michael Giacchino. The current executive producers are Abrams, Lindelof, Bryan Burk, Jack Bender and Carlton Cuse. Because of its large ensemble cast and the cost of filming in Hawaii, the series is one of the most expensive on television.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
This is Miles’ story and how he became part of Naomi’s crew to hunt Ben. Strangely enough, Dr. Chang is also Miles’ father. It’s also strange for him, because his mother is here as well. He’s a 3-month old baby.
Ilana asked Frank the following question:
What lies in the shadow of the statue?
Apparently, if you know the answer to this question, you can go to the Island. This is probably one of the most important things that has occurred in recent episodes. A guy named Bram asks this question to Miles. He doesn’t know the answer either. Initially, I thought that Bram was part of an Other group, but it’s apparent now that he is working with Ilana for another group’s interest. Plus, they both didn’t know who Ben was, so they aren’t Others. They aren’t Others and they want to find what lies in the shadow of the statue. Bram is also on the Island. They brought a large crate of guns and leave the beach for parts yet unknown.
There is one hypothesis that actually makes some sense. Ilana and Bram might be working for remnants of the Dharma Initiative. The Others killed the DI on the Island and took possession of the Barracks, but that doesn’t mean that the rest of the DI off-Island has been destroyed. With the Others and Ben doing their cold war against Widmore, it probably left a power vaccuum for the DI to refocus and to regroup.
There is a lot going on in the background of this episode. The end of the episode is most tantalizing when Faraday returns.
I really like this part of the story that is taking place in the 70s. So many answers are given and more questions arise. Faraday spent time off-Island with the DeGroots at Ann-Arbor. It’s not clear how he became part of the inner circle of the Dharma Initiative, but in two weeks, Faraday will come clean.

An Asian woman is checking out an apartment. A 10-year-old kid is there as well. It’s Miles as a kid. He goes around the complex and starts feeling something. He sees an old man in an apartment who’s fallen over. He hears him talking, but he’s dead.
A few years later, Miles is a teenager and comes back to see his dying mom. He wants to know why he can’t do the things he can. She says that his father is dead. She says that his dad has been dead a long time and that his body is somewhere where he won’t be able to find it.
Miles is helping a man find out what happened to his boy. He wants to find out if he knew that the father loved him. On the way to his car, Naomi recruits him for a mission. She brings him to a corpse. It’s his audition. The man was delivering papers to Widmore. Papers, photos of empty graves and a purchase order for an empty airplane. Naomi says that she is leading a mission to an island to find an individual. There is intel to be gained from the deceased on the island, who were killed by this individual. She offers him $1.6M to go on the mission.
Miles gets kidnapped. They want to stop him to work. He asks Miles if he knows what lies in the shadow of the statue. He says that since he doesn’t know, he shouldn’t go to the Island. If he comes with them, he’ll get answers and know about his father. It looks like they are part of an off-Island Others crew. Miles wants $3.2M. They won’t give him any money. Miles refuses and they toss him out of the van. Their leader, Bram, who is later a passenger on Ajira Airways Flight 316, asks Miles the question, “What lies in the shadow of the statue?”
Miles comes to see the man he “helped” out before. He gives him back his money. He says that he lied to him. He couldn’t talk to his son.
In the 70s, Sawyer tells Miles to erase some surveillance tapes from the security pylons. Kate leaves in a VW van. Horace comes to see Miles. He gives him something to deliver to Radzinsky. He needs to get something in exchange from him and bring it back. It’s a body bag. A Dharma Initiative man had an accident. He’s been shot in the head. They put the body in the van. Miles asks the body a question.
He brings the corpse. Horace wants it brought to Dr. Chang in the Orchid. Hurley wants to tag along. He’s got some food for the people at the Orchid. Hurley notices the smell in the car and finds Alvarez. He was digging a hole and thinking about his girl Maria. His filling got blown through his head. Hurley says that he can talk to the dead as well. Miles says that he feels the dead, not their thoughts. There are no conversations. Miles doesn’t believe Hurley. They arrive at the Orchid. Chang tells Hurley that if he tells anyone, he will ship him to Hydra Island and clean up polar bear feces. Miles says that Chang is his dad.
The 3rd day he was here, his mom stepped into the line behind him. Chang comes out and wants Miles to drive him to Radzinsky.
Hurley talks with Chang in the VW bus. It turns out that Miles is also a 3-month old baby. Chang says that he likes country music. Hurley is trying to make them get closer. Chang is at a hidden fence. It’s another construction site. It must be the Hatch. Hurley overhears the workers mark a hatch with the magic numbers. Hurley confirms that it’s the Hatch that will crash their plane. Miles says that he never knew his dad. Miles is mad. He reads Hurley’s notebook. It’s some story about Chewbacca. He’s writing The Empire Strikes Back. He’s seen Empire 200 times and plans to send it to George Lucas. He’s got some improvements included.
Hurley says that his dad left when he was 10. He gave him another chance. Miles says that he never knew his dad and he never wants to know him. Hurley says that this was Luke Skywalker’s attitude as well. It all could have been avoided if they communicated. Instead, a lot of grief happened and they got the Ewoks. The Ewoks suck.
Miles walks over to see his dad and himself. He’s reading a story to baby Miles. Chang comes out and says that he needs Miles. The sub has arrived with scientists. Faraday arrives.
Roger discovers that Ben has gone missing. He starts to freak out. Someone has taken him. Juliet says that he just left. He goes to see security. He’s being an ass to Kate and Jack. He says that Kate is strange. She gave blood to Ben and then acted all strange when Ben went missing. Jack says that he’s drunk.
Sawyer comes back home. Juliet is waiting for him. Jack is there. He says that Roger thinks that Kate is responsible for Ben’s disappearance. Jack leaves. Phil comes to see LaFleur. He says that LaFleur took the kid. Sawyer knocks him out and ties him up.
