The Closer Half Load S05E05 (TNT)

The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

From wiki’s page.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.

I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

Fritzi is driving Brenda. They are bringing Kitty’s stuff to someone who can use it. Gabriel calls. They’ve got a new case. Fritzi drives her. Some guy was killed. Father Jack employed him. Reggie Gray is an ex-con turned saint. Taylor arrives with Ramos. Father Jack is being an ass again. He is asking for a warrant. The cops don’t let him.

Sanchez gives the Chief the lowdown on the gang situation in the neighborhood. This area is an overlap of different gangs. Buzz gets a 70K grant from the feds. There is a prelim on the vic at the morgue. They don’t get much.

Pope isn’t happy that Father Jack is in a furor. He wants the Chief to calm the waters. Earlier, when Gabriel suggested a community meeting to get some info, the Chief dismissed it. She proposes it to Father Jack. Pope thinks that it’s an excellent idea. The Chief gets a tip about a gas station. She sends Tao, Buzz and Gabriel to the scene. They find a bunch of 38s. Sanchez notices something. This is the second time in a day that Sanchez goes to the church. He takes a kneel and crosses himself with Holy Water each time. They use Tao’s fancy lasers to see where the shots came from. It looks like Reggie was shot in someone else’s gunfight.

Someone named Tony Martinez made a 911 call. He says that he heard shots. He saw some guy in a Cadillac in an altercation. Two gangbangers were involved. Brenda uses the same line that Fritzi used on him. Try imagining something better. Fritzi used it when they were talking about having kids. Martinez says that he wrote down the license plate of the Cadillac. He didn’t get the chance to give it to the cops, they just rolled through.

The man is Kelvin Blake. He’s got an old rap sheet. Sanchez managed to convince Martinez to ID the two gangsters. Flynn and Sanchez go to pick them up. Blake is at the station to make his statement. He had the gun to defend his car from anyone who wanted to steal it. He fired the gun as a deterrent. He shot over their heads. She wants Blake to ID the guys. The Chief tells him that his rounds killed a man. He starts to cry.

Alonso and Enrique are at the station. They are pegged for three other car jackings. They ID Blake. She has them write it down. They are involving themselves in another attempted car jacking. Once that they have signed their statements, the Chief tells them about the felony-murder rule. They are going down for murder. They don’t understand until they are arrested.

Sanchez and the Chief brief Reggie’s mom. Father Jack says that she did well.
