The Closer Identity Theft S05E09 (TNT)

The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

From wiki’s page.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.

I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

Willy-Rae has got a surprise for Brenda and Fritzi. Their teenage niece needs a place to stay for the summer and she’s drafted them to do the job, since Clay and her can’t deal with a teenager. Surprisingly, Brenda bonds with Charlie, as she likes to be called, and she helps Brenda on a case. The case has to do with a schizophrenic kid and his father, who confessed to killing his alternative medicine doctor.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Brenda’s mom and her niece Charlie are in town. They are at an allocution. The accused confessed and now has to state this to the court. His son is in court. He was friendly with Charlie. James Clark was schizophrenic and is back on his meds. Russell Clark is the accused. He will enter a plea of guilty. His son was receiving a holistic medicine treatment. He is told that he has to give details on how he killed his son’s holistic doctor.

It’s obvious from his testimony that he didn’t kill the doctor. It doesn’t conform with the evidence at hand. The son killed the doctor. Commander Tayler and Lt Tao try to blame each other for the outcome. James gives a poem to Charlie and leaves.

Tao and Gabriel talked with James, but he wasn’t coherent enough at the time. He was off his meds.

The Chief talks with Clark. James is on a full academic scholarship at MIT. He was arrested for walking around naked. His wife died right before he went to college. He doesn’t give much and wants to go back to his cell.

The squad reconstructed the Milano’s office. They were making $300K a month. The wife and the doctor worked from the same office. There are some inconsistencies. They don’t know where the receptionist was and where the other patients got to.

Brenda skipped out of going to Disneyland with Charlie, Fritzi and her mom. They went to Venice beach instead. Willie-Rae wants Charlie to stay with Brenda and Fritzi for the rest of the summer.

Brenda wants to show Charlie how James is off his meds. James freaks out. He mentioned on the tape that the office was dark. This leads Brenda to think that the murder was premeditated. Willie-Rae tells Fritzi that Willie-Rae and Clay agreed to take Charlie for the summer. Clay won’t set down any rules. Willie-Ray says that he is uncontrollable. Her parents needed some time off.

Fritzi tells Brenda that Charlie might have been smoking pot, having sex with her boyfriend and getting to know some bad types. Brenda decides to take Charlie to the precinct. James is already infatuated with Charlie, and Brenda wants to use this.

Apparently Milano canceled all of his appointments of that day. He also told the receptionist not to come in.

Oh yes, not only am I good at remembering things that happened, I’m also good at remembering things that didn’t happen.
James to the Chief

James arrived at the office. The receptionist was gone. The blinds were drawn. Milano wasn’t answering any questions. His friends were there. His friends are the voices in his head. Then his father was there. He was searching for something. He confesses to strangling the doctor. James told his father that he strangled Milano with one of his socks. His father told him to get rid of his friends by managing his friends and behave. Charlie is watching the interview on the cameras and listening in.

The ADA wants to go through her deal with Russell Clark or charge James Clark. It’s up to the squad. While Pope and Taylor squabble, the Chief has deduced something. The wife of Milano has come in. She wants to get some of her stuff back. The Chief promised it to her. The Chief is actually using this to interview her as a suspect. She’s got a motive. Her husband was going to shut down their practice. She killed him. She even premeditated it by killing him in the dark. She gets arrested.
