I honestly don’t know how I missed this scifi show. I caught up on it three weeks ago and was impressed by the show, the acting and pretty much everything. The fact is that I wasn’t expecting much.

For the first few weeks in August, I kept seeing Defying Gravity in queues. I expected it to be some kind of extreme sports show. That is until I stumbled upon someone mentioning it as scifi. I did my homework and started watching the 7 episodes that I had missed.

I was surprised at how interesting this show was.

Warning: spoilers ahead

The show is all about a mission in space, in the near future, by astronauts. They are on a grand tour, visiting all of the planets of our solar system. The mission will take six years. The astronauts don’t know the whole truth behind the mission, as they will all discover in episode 9.

Until then, they have unexplained hallucinations, which endanger the mission. Meanwhile, the backstory of the show is also shown. It goes back 5 years when the mission was being planned. Donner and Ted are two of the astronauts that went to Mars 10 years ago. Two of their fellow astronauts were still outside when a storm hit. They had to leave the planet. They were ordered by Mike Gauss, who was still on the spaceship. Donner and Ted complied, but under extreme duress.

Donner’s lover was left on Mars, as well as another astronaut. This has haunted and tainted them ever since. They were part of the training team, but Mike was under orders that they should never be able to go to Venus. As it happens, at the last minute, Donner and Ted were taken aboard after two of the astronauts developed health problems.

Eve goes on about how they were chosen for this. Eve is now married to Ted, who was involved with Jen five years ago. Right now, Jen is married to Rollie, one of the two astronauts who was grounded. Donner is involved sexually with Nadia, the German astronaut, but is in love with Zoe, who was also involved with Donner 5 years ago.

Anyway, there is quite a lot happening in the past to explain the situation of all of the astronauts. It’s quite intriguing. I’ve watched nine episodes and I’m still hooked.

Donner is getting a blood test. Paula arrives to film it all. Mintz’s hands are shaking. The camera is making him nervous. Mintz has words with Paula and sends her away.

Zoe is about to take her abortion pill. The astronauts are going into an ER rotation. The doctors make bets on how long Donner can last without passing out. Claire and Mintz meet.

Mintz says that his back has been acting up since they left Earth. That’s what causing the shakes.

AJ arrives at mission control. Jen shows Zoe the rabbit fetus. She’s been hiding it. She wants help to give birth to it.

When Ted sees Paula and Wass bicker, he tells them that he’s got a job for them moving some giant crates about in 0g. Wass didn’t see that Paula wasn’t looking and she missed a toss.

The alarm sounds. There has been an accident. Paula lost a thumb and got an abdominal injury. Donner has to scrub in. Wass is freaking out because Mintz isn’t going to reattach the thumb. If she doesn’t have the thumb, she can’t pilot the lander to Venus. They are arriving in a week.

In the past, Mintz scrubs in when he sees a GSW dying when he could have saved him easily by opening him up. He gives the advice to the surgeon, but he won’t listen. Mintz takes over the case.

In the present, Mintz is about to incise. He sees the kid he lost. He is hallucinating. Mintz can’t see the burst vessel. Donner has to point it out and he manages to save her. This was what Mintz did in the past.

Zoe collapses. Donner brings her back into the hospital. She says that she was cramping. Jen tells the Alison, the doctor who trained with Donner, that Zoe just took an abortion pill this morning. She is miscarrying. She can’t let the program know, otherwise she will be out of it.

On the Antares, Nadia and Wass are cleaning up. Wass is trying to find Paula’s thumb. Wass finds it and they reattach it to her stump.

Ted wants to know what was up with Mintz. Jen says that she does. She found him on the floor in his lab. The strobing lights caused a war flashback.

Minsk told Claire in the past that he ordered the strike that hit a school. He tells the story to Ted and Donner. He couldn’t save the girl. A shell exploded on them and he couldn’t get to her. He tells them that this was a full blown hallucination.

Eve tells Zoe that she had an emergency hysterectomy. She had a cyst and it burst. That’s what the program is saying.

So Zoe can’t have any children anymore.
