I honestly don’t know how I missed this scifi show. I caught up on it three weeks ago and was impressed by the show, the acting and pretty much everything. The fact is that I wasn’t expecting much.
For the first few weeks in August, I kept seeing Defying Gravity in queues. I expected it to be some kind of extreme sports show. That is until I stumbled upon someone mentioning it as scifi. I did my homework and started watching the 7 episodes that I had missed.
I was surprised at how interesting this show was.
Warning: spoilers ahead

The show is all about a mission in space, in the near future, by astronauts. They are on a grand tour, visiting all of the planets of our solar system. The mission will take six years. The astronauts don’t know the whole truth behind the mission, as they will all discover in episode 9.
Until then, they have unexplained hallucinations, which endanger the mission. Meanwhile, the backstory of the show is also shown. It goes back 5 years when the mission was being planned. Donner and Ted are two of the astronauts that went to Mars 10 years ago. Two of their fellow astronauts were still outside when a storm hit. They had to leave the planet. They were ordered by Mike Gauss, who was still on the spaceship. Donner and Ted complied, but under extreme duress.
Donner’s lover was left on Mars, as well as another astronaut. This has haunted and tainted them ever since. They were part of the training team, but Mike was under orders that they should never be able to go to Venus. As it happens, at the last minute, Donner and Ted were taken aboard after two of the astronauts developed health problems.
Eve goes on about how they were chosen for this. Eve is now married to Ted, who was involved with Jen five years ago. Right now, Jen is married to Rollie, one of the two astronauts who was grounded. Donner is involved sexually with Nadia, the German astronaut, but is in love with Zoe, who was also involved with Donner 5 years ago.
Anyway, there is quite a lot happening in the past to explain the situation of all of the astronauts. It’s quite intriguing. I’ve watched nine episodes and I’m still hooked.

Paula is recovering nicely. Her hand is healing well. She is already capable of moving her thumb. It’s Halloween. They are going to shoot a candy commercial in space. Ted tells Paula that she isn’t going out on EVA. Paula almost starts to cry. Jen is replacing her. Nadia heard that the candy company gave 10 billion to the program.
In the past, Zoe is back in the program. Everyone is treading on eggshells around her. Eve goes back to see Beta. She sees Shaw telling her to go.
“Is there an increase in Gamma?”
Eve and Ted are talking about Mintz and the hallucinations. Eve says that it’s linked to Beta. Their son Roy arrives.
While Donner is getting his suit on, he sees that his helmet is like the one he had on Mars.
On the flight deck, Nadia starts hallucinating. She walks away. Zoe starts hearing the baby crying. Claire says that all of the crew are running fevers. They are all hallucinating. So is Eve. Claire and Eve brief Mike that all of them are hallucinating. Eve says that Beta’s pulse moves to a crescendo. Mike doesn’t want Beta revealed yet. Mike and Claire tell the candy company that the crew is on a bad patch of libido inhibitors. They are hallucinating. The crew doesn’t want to pull the plug on the commercial. The suits puts it to the crew and they say that they want to do the commercial.
In the past, Eve makes her move on Ted. She pushes her way in so that he misses part of his date with Jen. After seeing Donner and Nadia together, Zoe goes home to cry. Zoe goes as a pregnant lady.
Eve keeps hallucinating dead children.
While the astronauts are going out on EVA, Paula is filming. She hallucinates her dog Hector, who’s dead. When Mintz tries to help Paula, he starts hallucinating the girl. Donner hallucinates red steps filled with red dust. Zoe hears the baby crying. On the way out, Ted sees Mars again.
Eve managed to get Ted to tell her about the storm. The rover broke down. The storm hit. They had to cover the distance on foot. They were expecting the storm, but they didn’t know it was going to be that bad. They were less than 100m away and Gauss wanted them to launch. Eve says that she went through the records. There was no way that they were going to make it on time.
Mintz tells Claire that he can’t move. The hallucinations are really bad. Jen tells Donner that they need to go. They are the only ones who can do this. Donner calls it off. They lose 10 billion in funding. Donner still sees the spacesuit from Mars. Nadia still sees the man near the hatch.
Zoe starts telling Donner about the dream that she has been having on the Antares. Donner has been having the exact same dream.
