I honestly don’t know how I missed this scifi show. I caught up on it three weeks ago and was impressed by the show, the acting and pretty much everything. The fact is that I wasn’t expecting much.
For the first few weeks in August, I kept seeing Defying Gravity in queues. I expected it to be some kind of extreme sports show. That is until I stumbled upon someone mentioning it as scifi. I did my homework and started watching the 7 episodes that I had missed.
I was surprised at how interesting this show was.
Warning: spoilers ahead

The show is all about a mission in space, in the near future, by astronauts. They are on a grand tour, visiting all of the planets of our solar system. The mission will take six years. The astronauts don’t know the whole truth behind the mission, as they will all discover in episode 9.
Until then, they have unexplained hallucinations, which endanger the mission. Meanwhile, the backstory of the show is also shown. It goes back 5 years when the mission was being planned. Donner and Ted are two of the astronauts that went to Mars 10 years ago. Two of their fellow astronauts were still outside when a storm hit. They had to leave the planet. They were ordered by Mike Gauss, who was still on the spaceship. Donner and Ted complied, but under extreme duress.
Donner’s lover was left on Mars, as well as another astronaut. This has haunted and tainted them ever since. They were part of the training team, but Mike was under orders that they should never be able to go to Venus. As it happens, at the last minute, Donner and Ted were taken aboard after two of the astronauts developed health problems.
Eve goes on about how they were chosen for this. Eve is now married to Ted, who was involved with Jen five years ago. Right now, Jen is married to Rollie, one of the two astronauts who was grounded. Donner is involved sexually with Nadia, the German astronaut, but is in love with Zoe, who was also involved with Donner 5 years ago.
Anyway, there is quite a lot happening in the past to explain the situation of all of the astronauts. It’s quite intriguing. I’ve watched nine episodes and I’m still hooked.

Donner is daydreaming about the two lost astronauts again. The crew is getting near their Rubicon point.
Ted wants to tell the crew about Beta. Eve says that it’s not up to him or her.
Ted tells the crew that they will be leaving a time capsule behind.
Jen tells Rollie that she is growing a space rabbit. She says that it’s against protocol.
Nadia wants to hook up with Donner, but he says that things are different up here.
5 years back, Gauss makes a call and puts Donner and Shaw. Gauss tells them that he doesn’t want them on this mission. They have baggage. Gauss admits to fudging the scores.
Zoe is talking about the abortion pill with a guy. She finds her mom waiting for her outside her door. She says that her father has left her.
They find a glitch in the systems.
Eve examines the recordings of the Mars mission failure. Parts of it wasn’t reported. Gauss signed off on it as well as the National Security Council.
Donner asks Ted what he would do if someone started hallucinations. He says that he would report them to mission control and bar them from any EVAs or landings.
In the past, Rollie asks Jen out for a date, but she’s seeing Ted. She says no. He says that he only wants to ask her questions about her paper as a friend. While they are having a drink, Ted picks her up for dinner.
Donner meets Zoe’s mom. Zoe told her mom that she might be leaving the program. She’s 28th on the fly list. Mintz brings Donner’s baseball back. He threw it into the back of the class. The baseball that Donner has been carrying around belonged to Sharon. She caught it at a baseball game barehanded before their Mars mission. Right after, he gives the baseball to Sharon’s mom. Zoe’s mom figured out that she is preggers. Donner comes to see Zoe. He tells her not to leave.
In the present, Ted makes some mysterious comments to Donner. He starts getting suspicious. He thinks that Ted knows something. Donner miraculously finds what was wrong. It came to him because he hallucinated that the system was covered in red dust, like the dust from Mars.
Donner puts Sharon’s baseball into the time capsule.
Eve is in Mike’s face because of his animosity to Shaw and Donner. She says that he is out of line because he was the one who panicked, not them. Ted tells Eve about how Donner knew about the pH levels being off by looking at them. He also talked about hallucinations. Ted can’t tell him what is really going on. Beta is influencing everyone on the ship.
The ball was sent back to Donner by Sharon’s mom.
Donner finds the baseball on his bunk. Shaw recovered it. He says that it was all about being able to let it go, not actually letting it go for real. He sees that the ball is covered in red dust.
Donner actually throws the baseball into space.
