The Closer Smells Like Murder S05E10 (TNT)

The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

From wiki’s page.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.

I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

The Major Case Squad receives a cooler filled with a victim. Someone mailed it to them. It was found in a storage locker. A strange murder leads them to the lottery winnings. Also, Charlie is smoking pot, which doesn’t really sit well with her guardians.

Excellent episode, as usual. I really enjoy The Closer.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Lt Tao is on Facebook. The squad is talking about the detective’s exam. The squad is receiving some packets. One of them is suspicious. The call the bomb squad, who clear it. Provenza wants it opened in the Chief’s office. It’s a cooler filled with a DB.

Brenda is with Charlie and Fritzi doing the whole Hollywood tourist thing. She thinks that it’s going well, but Charlie is hating it. Fritzi points it out to Brenda, who gets a call from the Major Case Squad. The Chief isn’t happy about the stiff being found in her office.

Greg Lewis sent the package to the Major Case Squad. He reported it a few weeks ago, but no one came. He was told to mail it to the squad. He says that he found it in a storage locker. It was rented by Doug Courtney. His payment was refused because of a lapsed debit card. He tried to contact him, but he couldn’t. The DMV address belongs to his parents and he’s got a record for shoplifting and assault.

The only financial activity on Courtney was a deposit from an offshore bank account. It was for $6,500. There is still plenty of money left. If the card hadn’t lapsed, he’d still be in storage. It’s bad because the killer is the victim.

Charlie gets some mail. She doesn’t open her package. Fritzi leaves. It’s obvious that it’s something she wants to open alone. A vibrator or some pot. More likely some pot. That’s a bad idea with both her aunt and uncle are in law enforcement.

The Chief and Gabriels make the death notification. They haven’t seen him in three years. The step-father is verbally abusive to Doug’s mom. The Chief snoops around and finds Doug’s car. The Chief says that Gabriels is a credit agent for Amex. She goes into his Camaro and snoops around some more. Does she have a warrant? She’s being duplicitous because the family are still suspects in his death.

Tao says that there are over 200 lottery tickets in his bag. Courtney owed money to everyone. Terrence has got a very precise TOD because of the newspapers and bills found at the bottom of the cooler. They are dated 21st 2006 at around 6PM. They talk with Tina Latimer and landlord. He gambled all of his money away. This leads to Jordan Wallace. He’s his BFF. Wallace loaned him money until he owed him $10K. All of the suspects knew about the storage locker. Courtney cheated on Latimer with the landlord’s daughter.

Brenda comes home and finds Charlie cooking. Is she making pot brownies? Brenda smells something funny in her house. She finds the brownies and naturally eats one. She had three pot brownies and is obviously high. Charlie finds it funny. Charlie has cooked some good food.

Fritzi comes home and finds Brenda high. He isn’t happy with Charlie. He is livid. Fritzi is a recovering alcoholic, this would have messed him up. Charlie just finds it funny. Fritzi takes her phone and calls Charlie’s friend who mailed the package. He talks with her parents. He tells Charlie to pack her bags. She drugged her aunt without her permission. Brenda doesn’t do much but writes something on a napkin before falling asleep. It says “send back”. The next morning, she can’t remember what she realized.

Doug’s mom is here to talk with the Chief. She says that Doug kept in touch with her. He had been writing to her. Doug was in Hawaii and Australia to surf. She received letters until 5 months ago. This contradicts the evidence found by Terrence. While Terrence is blathering about, the Chief realizes why she wrote something down. She is going to mail four coolers to the suspects. Whoever opens the cooler is innocent. Whoever doesn’t open is guilty and tries to get rid of it. The coolers have GPS receivers and cameras.

Wallace is making a runner. The Dobsons haven’t opened the cooler yet.

Fritzi tells Brenda that he just bought Charlie’s plane tickets. Wallace has been traveling to Hawaii, Peru, New Zealand and Australia. He has been sending the letters. Tao discovers that a few months ago, Doug Courtney won the lottery. Only Wallace cashed in for 15 million. That was the motive.

They find him digging a grave for the cooler. They confront him and arrest him. The Chief has got some memory problems due to her inadvertent pot consumption.

Gabriels was studying for his detective sergeant exam. The Chief thinks that he passed it with flying colors.

The Chief tells Doug’s mom that she will inherit Doug’s 15 million. She needs to stand up to her abusive husband.

Brenda comes back home. She lays down the law to Charlie. She tells her to unpack and get to her room. Fritzi is against it but Brenda doesn’t want to give up on Charlie.
