FlashForward Gimme Some Truth S01E05 (ABC)

A mysterious global event causes everyone on the planet to simultaneously see, for two minutes and seventeen seconds, his or her life six months in the future. When it is over, many are dead in accidents involving vehicles, aircraft, and any other device needing human control. Everyone who survived is left wondering if what they saw will actually happen.

A Los Angeles FBI agent named Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes) tries to figure out what exactly happened and why it happened. Along with his team, he creates a database of people’s flash forwards from around the world called the Mosaic Collective (for which a website has been launched). Apart from the various catastrophic visions, people also see themselves engaging in unexpected behavior; for example, Benford sees himself drinking again, and his wife Olivia has a vision of herself with another man.

So there is another new science-fiction series. Well, it’s hard to attribute this series a science-fiction label, as unlike the book, the flash forward that the world experiences is only 6 months away. In the book, it’s 21 years and tied to the CERN Large Hadron Collider as well as the search for the Higgs boson. It’s based on a science-fiction novel of the same name by Robert J. Sawyer. That’s strange. I’ve been thinking about the Higgs boson for the last few days.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

So a plot tool from Lost has become a TV series in its own right. That’s kind of funny. What’s not funny is how slow the story progresses. Even with Lost, the story moves at a certain pace. The first episode of FlashForward seemed to just crawl along, with nothing really happening at all.

It’s also described as a thriller, but I’d call it a fake-thriller, since none of the thrills are surprising. They are easily predictable. However, the show is beautifully shot. I hope that the next few episodes will move at a quicker pace and we will discover more. No improvement on the pacing. This show was picked up for a full season, but it’s still very slow.

I still can’t believe that Defying Gravity was canceled before this show. Seems like such a waste. At least in Defying Gravity, there is a lot better pacing and the characters are engaging.

In this episode, the Mosaic FBI Division comes before a senatorial oversight committee chaired by a political opponent of Stan, who wishes him ill. POTUS has to intervene at a high price, setting the stage for Clemente’s vision of the future.

Also, the team finds some evidence in the CIA satellite images of Somalia. We learn more about Janis and her lesbian lover. The end and the beginning of the episode are marked by a Chinese assassination squad trying to take the members out. Janis is left lying in a pool of her own blood after she incapacitated two hitmen.

This series is faring better than Defying Gravity. It has been given a full first season.

The team is in Washington. After they get out of a bar or a meeting, they are ambushed by a bunch of Asians who attack their car. One of them shoots a propelled grenade at the car, which explodes.

39 hours earlier, the team is in Washington for some senate hearings. Demetri is first up. They are getting polygraphs. They are getting questioned about their flash forwards.

Mark phones Erin. Erin is fixing his alarm system. Erin tells him to find a DC AA meeting. Olivia overhears it.

Stan is in a 1-1 basketball game with Dave. Stan is worried that they will take their funding away. Stan didn’t know that Clemente is chairing the hearings. He’s a political enemy.

Janisis in a dojo. Numb3rs hottie Navi Rawat plays Janis’s friend. She gets handed 18 years of satellite footage from Somalia. They need to find some ammo for Stan in Washington.

Stan’s friend is the President of the United States. That’s a good friend to have. Stan and his team sit in on a press briefing. He implies that he is redistributing funds to best leads.

The President saw something in his flash forward, but he’s not mentioning anything.

Olivia thinks that things aren’t going well in Washington. She brings up the AA thing. The last time that he was traveling a lot, he was off the wagon. She’s worried about Mark.

Dave speaks with Stan. POTUS wants Stan to become the Director of Homeland Security. He’ll be part of the Cabinet. Sounds like a bribe or a buy off, I’m not sure.

Janisis having dinner with Navi Rawat. She’s playing a chef. Didn’t catch her name yet. Janis has got some great tattoos on her arm. Janis is a lesbian. She’s on a date with her. Janis kisses her in the restaurant. It’s hot, but it looks forced. Not very natural.

In the senatorial hearings, Clemente is getting some strange feedback from the agencies. The CIA blames China. Joyce Clemente approaches him in the hallway. There is some bad blood between them. He did something six years ago. He covered up something the President did. Joyce was his opponent. She would have been President. Joyce says that she saw herself as President in six months. Joyce grills Stan during the hearing. Clemente wants Benford to testify. This was a trap. Clemente has got them in her snare.

Janis and Navi Rawat make out the morning after. That’s hot. It might be a setup. She seems to have gotten very close to Janis quickly.

Benford’s testimony isn’t going well. Clemente is ridiculing him. Stan walks out. In LA, Janis finds some pylons in the desert. She calls Benford. The pylons were built from scratch in 5 months. They were about 100 feet tall.

Janis meets Maya at the gallery opening. Maya mosaic’ed her. She found out that Janis was preggers in six months. In her flash forward, Maya was getting married and had a wedding ring. Maya thinks that they might have been involved.

Stan goes to see Renee. He was the bagman who paid off Renee $250K to make her go away. Renee was involved with the President. He gives a photo of the President and her to him when they meet. He found her thanks to the Mosaic website searches. He wants the President to stop Clemente.

Stan comes to see Mark. He’s pissed and Mark is pissed as well. When Stan pushes him, Mark blurts out that he was drunk. Stan can’t believe this. He has put his career on the line.

Olivia gets an SMS. It tells her that Mark was drinking in his flash forward. Stan tells Mark to shut up. The President has nominated Clemente to be his Vice President. He phones Janis to tell her that the funding has come through. At that point, they get hit by the car.

The grenade impacts a few moments later. Someone tries to attach Janis, but she’s fast. She gets shot. She incapacitates her attackers. They are all Chinese. Demetri, Mark and the others fight off their attackers.

Janis is lying in a pool of her own blood.
