The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.
Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.
Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Cho and Lisbon are at an event. They are schmoozing for money for the department. Meanwhile, someone is robbing the Doverton jewelers. Lisbon was schmoozing Mrs. Doverton. There are shots.
The whole team is here. Jane is going to be performing. He makes a great speech, guilt-tripping the rich, and then produces some incredible illusion. Mrs. Doverton gets a call. She says that Carl has been shot.
The Doverton nephews come with the CBI. The man who was shot was sleeping with their aunt. He was her mimbo. Carl isn’t dead yet.
Van Pelt finds out that the car fleeing from the scene is registered to Doyle Murphy. Jane comments that this is all very neat and easy. Jane thinks that this is a setup and an inside job. Jane thinks that Carl is involved.
Rigsby tells Van Pelt that Jane knows about them. Van Pelt says that she is sick of the CBI rules concerning fraternization between agents. They visit Murphy. Murphy is dead of course. He got a visit from a man in a cowboy hat. They find him shot. They find a gun. It was also used to shoot Carl Ward.
Jane tells them to bring the clerk from the motel back. He hypnotizes him and finds out some more details. It leads them to a bail bondsman. His sister was married to Murphy.
I’m a dynamic businessman who pushes the envelope.
A perp
Lisbon finds out that Ward was a con artist. He owed more than $90K and served in jail.
Apparently Murphy owed the bondsman $200K. No-nonsense Cho questions Colepepper.
Jane doesn’t believe that Ward is the guy. Van Pelt finds footage of Tom Doverton and Murphy talking on the security tapes. Van Pelt questions him. He denies everything.
Cho finds Colepepper gone. Lisbon lets Doverton go. They’ve got noting on him. Jane is letting Colepepper go. Jane wanted to see what the Dovertons were going to do when they saw Colepepper.
The coroner found a large diamond in Murphy’s lower intestine. Jane isn’t convinced. He smashes the diamond and it slips away in the office.
Jane thinks that Tom and Murphy met at rehab. Lisbon and Jane investigate the place that they went to. Jane makes Lisbon be the one who needs rehab so that the can snoop around.
Murphy’s sponsor was George Doverton. The director didn’t like them snooping, so he warns the Dovertons. When they arrive, Tom tries to say that George is gone. Jane finds him quickly enough. He was hiding behind a door. Before they leave with George, he receives a ransom note for the aunt. They make the call. It sounds fake to me. They talk to the kidnapper and they tell him that they don’t have the money. When the call is traced, Rigsby runs out. He leaves the Dovertons alone. They continue talking and the man shoots the aunt. Jane rushes by. It’s a total setup. George runs out. The phone rings again. Tom picks up and he tries to negotiate with the kidnapper. He offers $75K to buy the kidnapper off. It’s Jane talking. Tom confesses to killing Murphy.
They tell Mrs. Doverton that Tom was involved. Jane is waiting with Carl. Mrs. Doverton isn’t far. Carl doesn’t know that she is near. Jane makes him say that he loves Mrs. Doverton. It was Jane’s gift to Mrs. Doverton.
Rigsby finds the diamond.
