The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.
Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.
Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

A saleswoman of luxury cars is found dead in a Bentley. Her name is Laselle Douglas. She worked in a cut-throat business. Zenith Motors sells a hundred million dollars worth of cars a year. James Kinsley was the top salesman. He tried to get busy with Laselle, but she wasn’t interested. Her boyfriend is Jeff. Lisbon tells Van Pelt and Rigsby that she has to inform the bureau about their relationship.
Jane and Lisbon go see Jeff. He was jealous about the men who kept propositioning her and sending her gifts. She returned them all except one: an expensive print on the wall. This leads them to question Walter Mashburn, one of Laselle’s rich clients.
She would have just disappeared, like smoke, like she was never there.
Walter Mashburn to Patrick Jane
Laselle was killed by a car. Zenith Motors had a Ferrari gone missing. The boss canceled the missing car report.
Van Pelt and Rigsby question Landau, the dude who apparently stole his wife the Testarossa. At least, that’s the story. He tells them that he asked Laselle’s boyfriend to help him out to get some dope out of the Testarossa.
Jane visits Mashburn. Jeff is found at some club. He crashed the Testarossa and is wielding a katana. Lisbon talks him down. Rigsby makes a faux-pas with Grace. They talk about marriage. Grace doesn’t like that it’s looking like she’ll be transferred out. My guess is that the opposite will happen: Rigsby will be transferred away, maybe promoted up. Jeff confesses to taking the car for Landau. Maybe he’d get a break. Landau is a record producer. Lisbon needs Jane to conduct her interrogation. Jane is scoping out Mashburn. Cho arrives just as Jane is being blindfolded by Mashburn. Jane is going to drive the Lamborghini Gallardo by reading Mashburn. The goal of all of this was to see Mashburn’s reaction when the Lambo fell off a cliff. Or was it? It leads them back to Zenith for Jane to purchase a car for Mashburn. They have Elias, the 2nd top salesman show them around. Jane is reading Elias to find a car. The car that killed Laselle. Elias tries to do a runner, but Cho easily chases him down like a dog. Mashburn was sorry that it’s over.
Elias was poisoning Kinsey. Laselle figured it out and told Elias that he had to confess.
Lisbon tells Van Pelt and Rigsby that she didn’t inform the bureau and that they shouldn’t kiss nor cuddle at the office.
