The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.
Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.
Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

They arrive at the Hopper Banks residence. A British tutor was found dead. Jane says that the tutor was full of crap. The tutor’s fancy resume is probably a fairy tale. Jane finds an ornate box. The body reanimates for some reason. The guy is alive, but brain dead. Jane finds the place where the ornate box was buried. It was in a rosemary bush.
The parents don’t want the kid who found the body to talk with the cops. Her name is Laney.
Van Pelt finds out that James Smithson doesn’t exit. The passport is fake and the references are fake. The security man is an old friend of Rigsby.
Cho talks to Smithson’s other students. At the Blankman residence, Jane makes some tea. He sprays some Pledge on Mrs. Blankman’s cup to remind her of James. He was her lover.
Bandino mentions that Hopper asked for a gun a few months ago. James was killed with a .38.
Jane divines that Jolene, Hopper’s hot new wife, was sleeping with James. On their way back from Hopper’s place, they pick up a tail. He’s an inspector for Scotland Yard’s Special Branch. He says that James’ real name was Oliver Stands. He stole an artefact from the British Museum, Cleopatra’s wedding ring, giving to her by Marc Anthony. Stands lifted the ring and replaced it with a fake.
He says that Louis Anglet has the ring now. They picked up chatter a few weeks ago which led the inspector here. The inspector did a runner.
It turns out that the inspector isn’t on the case. He’s just looking for the ring. The new boss arrives. Lisbon has to explain why a person of interest escaped.
Lisbon’s new boss tells her that she needs to keep Jane in line. If she can’t do so, they’ll find someone who can.
Hightower gets a warrant for the Hopper Banks place. They find one of Banks’ photos. The model is holding a Colt 38 detective special, the same gun that was used to kill James.
Slokum is James’ father. Jane waits for him at his son’s bedside. Slokum is going to kill Anglet.
Hightower tells Jane what she told Lisbon. If Jane messes up, Lisbon is gone. It’s a good way of making sure that Jane behaves.
Banks says that he bought the gun illegally. He can’t find it anymore and the search didn’t turn it up. Banks was researching the ring that James stole. He was also calling Anglet.
They are tracking Anglet through his cell phone and his credit card. Van Pelt tells Lisbon that someone else is also tracking Anglet. It must be Slokum. They make a stakeout. They find him when he pulls a gun on Anglet. Cho and Rigsby get them both.
While Lisbon is talking with Anglet, his $1500/hour lawyer arrives. Hightower wants to build up the meter.
Jane tells Anglet that he bought a fake, a replica. He got had. He sold the ring for more than $200K. When they find out that it is a fake, the customer will be mad.
They go warn Banks about this. Bandino tries to get away during the night and Anglet comes by to beat him up. Bandino is the one who sold the ring and killed Oliver.
Bandino did a background check on Oliver and found out who he was. He put him in contact with Anglet. He killed Oliver because he didn’t want to sell the ring. He killed him.
Hightower tells Lisbon that Rigsby and Van Pelt are in a relationship and she’ll be doing something about it, since Lisbon hasn’t done anything.
Slokum gets the ring to return it to the British Museum.
