The Mentalist 18-5-4 S02E21 (CBS)

The Mentalist tells the story of Patrick Jane played by Simon Baker, a man specializing in studying the micro-expressions of people who became involved with trying to catch a serial killer named Red John. Red John killed his wife and daughter. Since then, Jane has been working with the stupidly named CBI, California Bureau of Investigations, a kind of state police.

Robin Tunney plays Agent Lisbon, who is in charge of the unit. Van Pelt is the new agent on the squad. Rigsby has a crush on her. The Mentalist is kind of like the TNT show Psych, but it’s not a comedy, it’s a drama. I’ve enjoyed this series because it’s light and interesting. I’ve kind of come to despise Criminal Minds.

Jane uses his semi-celebrity and his lack of protocol to solve cases quickly, cases in which the CBI wouldn’t be able to come up with answers without him. Each episode has the color red in its title. The Mentalist resembles the show Lie to Me, which premiered in 2009 on Fox. The Mentalist started on the 23rd of September 2008 on CBS.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

A clown shoots Noah Valliquette, cut off an index finger, and fled the scene. The trouble is that there are a lot of clowns in the area. It’s a clown convention. Actually, there are here on a casting call for clowns.

They go to see Noah’s wife. Apparently he was a mathematical genius but had trouble with crowds. Noel was a published mathematician, but not associated with a university. He had trouble with crowds. He started day-trading a few weeks ago. Noah was terrified of clowns. He played chess with a puzzle store owner with a strange name, Tolman Bunting, or something like that. Jane starts playing a game of chess with him.

Van Pelt says that Noah wasn’t day trading. He was just sending a bunch of numbers. Noah’s wife calls them. Someone is in their house. They come and find the door forced open. The y find a safe that was hidden. They know why the index finger was needed. It was to open the safe. They find the index finger. They find a chessboard, a comic book and some papers inside. It was Noah’s house before she moved in.

Jane says that the comic book is valuable and inside one of the chess pieces, they find a key to a locker. They also trace Alex Moska, the person who Noah sent emails. The dude thinks that they were debt collectors. He tries to get away and offers them $14K. Noah was helping him place bets using rational analysis. Recently, his picks went south and Alex was losing money. He had trouble focusing. They go back to see Tolman. He has an armed guard with him. He takes him into his back office. He runs a private firm decrypting codes. He was working on a secret device that could decrypt anything. Tolman offered anyone 2 million who could make it. Recently, Noah called him and said that he had completed the device, but was having second thoughts about selling it. Tolman decided that he hadn’t completed the device at all.

One of the two other people working on this is Oliver Simon McDaniel, who’s in a mental hospital.

He’s a cyber-clone sent by the galactic quantum lords.
McDaniel

McDaniel met Noah in grad school. For some reason, Jane is goading suspects with the key to the locker 42 that they found in the chess piece. While they leave, McDaniel escapes. Alert the quantum lords!

McDaniel was gone for 4 hours when Noah was murdered. He made a key pass and used it to come and go as he pleased. He must have known exactly where the locker was. So does Jane, after having Van Pelt recommend a spa place near the ocean. McDaniel kept talking about shiatsu massages.

McDaniel uses a flight to Brazil as misdirection. Jane calls Lisbon. She comes running and they wait for McDaniel. They tail him. He goes into Pacific Park. He gets hit by Tolman. Cho and Lisbon find him trying to break into the locker. They chase him. Jane goes after the device. He tries the key, but it’s not for the right locker. They have him in custody. He doesn’t look worried. Lisbon gets a call from the AG. AG wants Bunting let go.

Bunting is free. Jane comes to see him, after enlisting McDaniel’s help. The wife and the brother are there. The device doesn’t work, because Jane had Oliver switch it off, but the wife looks at it and knows exactly what to do to make it work. She pushes a button and it works. The file says that his wife killed him. She killed him.

Bunting is here to get the device. Jane destroyed it.
