I wanted to go out yesterday, but I had to do some work and by the time I was getting ready, it was already supper and I needed to eat something. I was really itching to go out, but decided to go tomorrow. I initially wanted to go for 50-100km, but in retrospect, I think that it’s probably good that I’m starting off slowly. I wouldn’t want to injure myself. That has happened before.
The one annoying thing about the Garmin Edge 500 is that it takes a while for it to sync with the satellites when you first put it on. After that, there is no lag, but it takes a few minutes. I read that the Garmin Edge 705 takes even longer. Anyway, I timed myself for 20.8 km and I completed that in 47:29, so that was almost 3 minutes faster than yesterday.
It took me 1:07:45 to complete 28.72 km. Not bad, but not great. My average speed was 25.5 kph, so that’s faster than yesterday. I burned off 1,003 calories. My top speed was 40,3 kph. BTW, there are almost no hills or climbs or descents on this route, so this is on the flats.
There is a slight incline from Bitan to Taipei and that’s where I hit my max speed. I could have completed it a lot faster, but there was a lot of traffic that kept me from speeding away. However, I think that it’s good because I had to slow down and accelerate quite a lot. This made it a better workout than on Friday.
I definitely need to go out at least once a day in order to improve quickly. This is how I got into shape in 2008-2009. It’s always hardest in the beginning, but once you got the itch to train, it’s easier. One of the reasons why I want to head out more is because I do feel out of shape and the HRM data proves this. Still, this is a great workout. My legs used to be in a lot better shape too. I can tell because I used to recuperate fast. Anyway, it’s going to be a fun training week.
Although the cycling path ends near the Siolang bridge in Yonghe, when I crossed the bridge to Taipei and rode to Bitan, I could see cyclists on the other side. So there must be a path over there too. It’s definitely worth checking out. Maybe there’s only a small part that’s not yet ready for cyclists.
Also, I made the mistake of eating a meal before leaving on the bike. I won’t be making that mistake again. I’ll drink smoothies, but I actually had some steak and veg half an hour before heading out. That wasn’t a good idea. I felt bloated and towards the end, I felt like I was going to throw up.
