6KM Short Run

I went out for a run tonight. It started out alright, but towards the end, my knees were hurting. That’s what happens when you start running a lot after having not worked out that much for a while. Hacking myself back into shape isn’t going to be an easy process, but it’s already made significant changes.

At some point, long-distance running becomes an exercise in pain management and endurance. I’m not surprised that my knees were hurting. They have been a bit sore since last week. Anyway, I got the run done in a faster time than on Sunday. I ran 6km in 49:18. Average pace was 8:13min/km. Best pace was 3:22min/km. Average heart rate was 150bpm with a high of 212bpm (!) 33 minutes in. Average temperature was 29.5°C.

In the first 25 minutes, my heart rate didn’t go above 160bpm. I had to take quite a few breaks after this, to give respite to my knees. It wasn’t a cardio issue, just pain. I hope that my knees will adapt fairly quickly. If they don’t, I’ll hop back on the bike instead. I’m really itching to see the difference that a week of running will do to my bike times.
