The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.
She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.
Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.
Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.
The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.
I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

Brenda is considering to apply for the Chief of Police position. Fritzi finds out. The Deputy Chief is investigating a suicide, which turns out to be a murder that hits close to home. She uses the case to see who is fit to take over the squad, and all that she can see is that Sgt Gabriels would be the best choice, but his record and rank disqualify him from taking over.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Fritzi found out from Raydor that Brenda is being vetted for the Chief of Police. Gabriel calls her with a case. Fritzi wants her to delegate to Provenza. She’s got 3 LTs on her team. Brenda is wondering who will take over Major Crimes. Fritzi tells her to promote one of her LTs. He wants her to take this job.
It turns out that it was a murder, not a suicide. She was in her boyfriend’s car. Sanchez has got the kid from the last episode in his car. The boyfriend is named Wayne West. She was in the passenger seat. Wayne makes a run for it. Provenza discovers the kid. Sanchez has been holding onto the kid for a week.
The coroner wants to call it a suicide. He’s being difficult. Wayne dumped some meth before doing his runner. Tao tackled him. Wayne wants to talk. He doesn’t say much. He says that she had custody problems with her ex-husband. She was a druggie and didn’t have any visitation rights.
Taylor tells the chief that if Pope becomes Chief of Police, he’d like to take over Major Crimes. They visit the husband, his mother, and the daughter Cody. The father has got lymphoma. He gave Gina $25K when she came out of rehab. He got the court to order her into rehab.
The boyfriend deposited $25K into his bank account. Sanchez is having trouble with his duties. The Chief is giving her LTs a chance to prove themselves to see if they are fit to take over Major Crimes. Wayne says that Tatum gave him the money to convince her to sign away her parental rights.
Tatum just wired another $25K into West’s bank account. It’s looking more like murder for hire. Tatum hired a PI. The PI was keeping tabs on West, and he didn’t kill Gina.
They serve a search warrant and it’s pandemonium. He locks himself away and shoots himself in the head. He left a note. The coroner says that Tatum had a few weeks left. The Chief is dubious. Someone else killed Gina. He coroner says that Gina was jacked up on meth when she died.
Pope tells her that he might promote her into his old job if he makes Chief. Pope also tells her that Taylor might be a good fit for Major Crimes in case she accepts the promotion.
The Chief comes back to the station. She finds her LTs and Gabriel arguing. Tao discovered that Tatum was working on his musical score during the murder. The Chief says that this decision isn’t theirs to make, it’s for the courts. She has the Tatums brought in.
The Tatums are not cooperative. One of them killed Gina. She threatens them with CPS. They were going to lose Cody because Gina tested clean on Thursday. Albert wanted Gina to sign away her parental rights. Instead, the grandmother went to meet with her. She also brought a gun. She killed Gina. The Chief says that her husband will be brought in so that she can tell him. The Chief tells Flynn to write it up as a murder. She listens in to what is being said and she’s certain that grandma told the truth.
Fritzi tells Brenda that she could find a replacement outside of the LAPD if she was Chief of Police. The only one in her division who shares her views is Gabriel.
