The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.
She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.
Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.
Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.
The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.
I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

Pope dismisses Brenda as a serious candidate for the Chief of Police post. This riles Brenda. Meanwhile, Provenza and Flynn made blundering fools of themselves by believing that two flight attendants weren’t involved in a drug smuggling ring.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

LT Provenza and Flynn are out with some young women. They look like prostitutes but are flight attendants. Provenza’s girl has got a Southern accent. He pops a Viagra. He finds a dead dude in the bathtub. He’s contaminating the crime scene. The flight attendant doesn’t know him. Provenza thought that it was her roommate.
The DB died at around 9PM. It’s kind of embarrassing for Provenza, who’s still got an erection. The victim had a broken neck. The assailant swung randomly. It seems more of an accidental death. The victim is Coto. He fell and broke his neck. They found the cellphone of a Ryan Wade, another flight attendant in the condo. Flight crew are now staying in trailers. They find Ryan dead inside. There are traces of drugs in the trailer.
The Deputy Chief tells Pope that she needs help from Narcotics, but all of the detectives have transferred out. Johnson tells Pope that she was drafted to apply for the position of Chief of Police. Pope is pissed.
The Chief thinks that the flight attendants could have asked the cops out for alibis. Jose Coto raised a flag with the FBI. Fritzi has come by. Coto is from Honduras. He was a driver working for Diaz. Fritzi needs to be involved in the case.
Ashley tells the Chief that she suspected that Ryan was a drug mule. Ryan was shot 4 times, 2 times in the head. The flight attendants keep lying to the Chief. The Chief tells them that they have been released because they aren’t involved. The girls are worried. The Chief tells Provenz and Flynn to invite them out. They will wire his place. Ashley admits to smuggling some wine off the plane. Ashley says that they knew Coto. They admit to smuggling coke from Honduras. Jose paid them in cash. This happened once a month, then once a week, then every time when there was a plane connecting from Honduras. This week, they decided to take the coke. They were trying to sell the coke to a contact. There is a hole in the story. Each time a plane connects from Honduras, Captain Wheeler was flying the plane.
Wheeler tells them that Wade came to see him with a strange, convoluted story about drugs. Wheeler went to a hotel because Wade scared him. Wheeler is obviously involved. The only other person who has a key is Ashley. She’s the owner of the trailer. Wheeler lied to them about how Wade got to the trailer. The girls say that Wheeler recruited them for this scam. The girls admit that they used the cops. The girls are arrested.
Wheeler has got Ashley’s car keys. Wheeler took the car from Wade and the drugs. He left the keys for Diaz. He took the dope. They have Wheeler call Diaz to tell him where the dope is.
Provenza and Flynn are idiots. They let the girls get away in Provenza’s car.
The girls arrive to try and mess things up. Provenza and Flynn arrive. It’s a fiasco, but everyone is arrested.
Pope tells Johnson that she can apply, but she will never be considered seriously. He isn’t worried. He says that it will deter other women from applying, since she’s a serious candidate. Now, Johnson wants the job even more.
