The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.
She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.
Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.
Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.
The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.
I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

A hostage situation turns out to be more than expected, as Fritzi gets involved. Now that Brenda made the shortlist for Chief of Police, and Pope didn’t, we’ll probably see him trying to sabotage some investigations.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.

There is a bank robbery. The two assailants have automatic rifles. They take refuge in a store named Fantasy Kitchens. They’ve been inside for 3 hours. Fritzi arrives on the scene. Pope is there. They talk with. 3 hostages are released. They hear shots fired. Suspects went out the backdoor firing. Fritzi wants to see their faces. Fritzi says that they are missing 3 suspects. They are part of the Dear Jane gang. They target a woman at the bank and know all about her family. They brought their ID to the bank robbery.
Jason McDonald’s place was filled with safes. Fritzi’s new appointment is the FBI liaison to the LAPD. It just came through this morning. Fritzi didn’t know about this promotion. He walked in this morning and got promoted. It looks like Brenda will become the new Chief. At least, that’s what the FBI thinks. They haven’t found Dennis Bailey’s place. Jason isn’t the criminal mastermind. The registered owner of a car that drove off from the parking lot is Steve Wayward, the hostage negotiator.
They think that Hayward is the mastermind. They show him photos of his car. The car belongs to his wife.
Brenda and Fritzi go see Dennis’ brother Jed. Jed says that his brother was non-violent. They find Dennis’ place. They find $40K in his medicine cabinet, baseball caps, and brown coveralls. They find a rental receipt for a car exactly like Detective Hayward’s.
They stole the license plate from the Hayward’s wife’s car. They catch him pretty easily. The FBI catches him. They kind of spoiled the Chief’s op.
Fritzi and Brenda argue at home. Brenda went for the jugular with Fritzi, and he didn’t like it.
All of the Dear Jane gang had financial problems. The Chief and Pope argue a bit about the situation at the office. Pope looks like an ass. He’s just having a hissy fit because he won’t become Chief of Police. Gabriel finds a link between the Haywards and the Dear Jane gang. Jed Bailey went to the same school as Jason. They need a link between Boyd and Jason. Brenda muscles her way into getting a search warrant for Boyd’s place. Boyd is related to Dennis. He’s his 2nd cousin. The Haywards go to the same church as Jed Bailey. They arrest Bailey for the three homicides. Bailey’s neighbour does a runner. Gabriels chases after him. He’s living beyond his means. Gene is also part of the gang. Bailey is the criminal mastermind. Gene participated in over 30 bank robberies orchestrated by Bailey. He took 60% of the take. Bailey told his gang to pass on this bank. They went into it on their own accord. Bailey found too many entrances or exits. He basically admits to being there. The criminal mastermind doesn’t know that he just implicated himself in three murders. He’s an accessory to the murder of the security guard.
The FBI brings over Boyd. The LAPD arrests him for the triple murders. They hand over Gene to the FBI so that he can be charged for the bank robbery.
Brenda apologizes to Fritzi. Pope kind of apologizes to Brenda. Brenda made the shortlist for Chief. Pope isn’t on the list. Pope is frustrated again.
