The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

From wiki’s page.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.

I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

When three soldiers are killed, the Deputy Chief gets interference from the Army, who wants to classify this as a terrorist attack. Pope also doesn’t help things. Is he annoyed that Brenda made the shortlist and he didn’t?

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

There was a drive-by using an AK47 by a club. The area is neutral gang-wise. The vics were veterans, not gang members. The 3rd victim is still alive. Baylor is an Army Ranger. His lungs have collapsed. He doesn’t say much.

The squad is collecting mobiles from the witnesses. Sergeant Willy O’Getty, Sgt Lance Riggs, and Sgt Baylor all died. They are all from the Rangers. Baylor is a local. The three soldiers came home from Afghanistan. The shooter called out T-Ball before shooting. A T-Ball runs with the 110 Crips. They rolled in Baylor’s neighbourhood.

Major Dorcet arrives from the Army. Dorcet thinks that this might be a national security issue. Dorcet wants the FBI involved. Baylor’s twin brother is T-Ball. He runs with the Crips and is a gang member.

T-Ball thinks that he was the target. There was a hit on him last Thursday. They confirm it. There’s a store near his place. It was a no-go zone. A few weeks ago, there was a double murder. Reggie Moses was a suspect.

They’ve got until noon to figure this out. Dorcet is delaying notifying the DOD. Pope is MIA.

Reggie Moses is the #3 in the 110 Crips. They found the bullets. They match the AK that killed the soldiers. The Chief thinks that Reggie is in the frame for the murder of the Newton murders.

Pope arrives. He decides to give T-Ball immunity. He might be trying to sabotage the case. They give T-Ball his immunity. The DA draws it up. T-Ball says that he knows that Reggie killed the Newtons. He saw him flee the scene. The Chief suspects him of killing the kid. T-Ball lies and the Chief tells him that his immunity deal is at stake. T-Ball admits to killing the Newtons. Reggie isn’t involved. He confesses to killing them. T-Ball was lying all of the time.

They provoke Reggie. He revokes his right to counsel. He says that T-Ball is the killer. The store was protected. Things like that come back to haunt you on the streets or in prison. They tell him that the two other people are still alive. He missed everyone.

The Chief tells Reggie that T-Ball will walk, even after he killed those people. She tells him that he will go free. She says that it’s time for Reggie to get his phone calls, as many as he wants. Reggie will get the death penalty.

Pope apologizes. The Chief doesn’t give a rat’s ass. Justice will be served. Sanchez was in the room with her when this happened. The Chief drives T-Ball home. The Crips are waiting for T-Ball when he comes home.
