The Closer is an American police drama starring Kyra Sedgwick, who plays a Deputy Chief of Police at the LAPD. Sedgwick plays Brenda Leigh Johnson, an ex-CIA interrogator. She is a southern belle and her easy going charm has surprised more than one criminal during an interrogation. She always gets the bad guys. She was put in charge of the Priority Homicide division of the LAPD.

She’s had to deal with conflict from Commander Taylor, chief of detectives, since she was promoted over him from the outside to her current position. This conflict has been resolved in season 4. Commander Taylor is now one of her staunchest allies. Her team are seasoned veterans, some close to retiring like Lt Provenza, others like Sgt Gabriel just a few years into their police careers. Daniels was promoted off the squad and this season, there is a new conflict with Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell), who investigates any civilian deaths in officer involved shootings.

Her personal life wasn’t always as stable as it is right now. She’s currently engaged to an FBI Agent named Fritz Howard, who helps her from time to time on some cases. They’ve just sold Brenda’s bungalow and moved into a temporary space as they search for a new house to buy.

Brenda is a severe workaholic, to the sacrifice of her personal relationships. She tends to micro-manage her investigations and take a close look at details. She loves junk food and sweets but is currently trying to lay off them. She usually hides all types of junk food in drawers, purses, and other places. She is also known to be a “bit of a slob”, commenting that she does not often get around to housework every day in one episode, and in another, during a small argument between her and Fritz over where her mail was, Fritz comments that “if she looked at her mail daily instead of once a week, she would know where they keep it”.

The Closer is one of the best police dramas on television right now and is in its fourth season on TNT. Each summer sees 13 episodes. A feature length episode is shown over the holidays. For this season, the episode format has changed. The show has returned for five more episodes in 2009 and season 5 started out a few weeks ago.

I’ve been a bit lax about posting reviews, but rest assured that all Closer episodes were watched and reviewed. They just haven’t been posted. They will find their way onto this site.

The Chief investigates a comedian and her vlog to find out who killed her.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Judy Lynn has been killed. She’s some kind of performer. She had sex before she died. She’s been dead for 36 hours. She has BFT. She was smothered to death with a pillow. She’s an actress and data entry clerk.

Commander Taylor is trying to take over because the Chief has got her final interview with the mayor. A friend of Judy found the body. She had joined an internet dating site. They have a lead on her date. They have footage from all of the cameras at her building. The date arrived and left in her car. They see him leave close to midnight. They see him standing near his car.

The Chief tells Pope that she doesn’t want to be Chief of Police. Raydor, Taylor, and Pope talk with her. Raydor tells the Chief that if she doesn’t show up, there will be severe consequences. They tell her that Pope might be fired and Major Crimes dismantled. Raydor has to prep her. She has to give her a little makeover.

They found Dreamweaver, aka Mark Torres. The Chief lets Taylor take over the case. They have a sting op on Torres. Tau plants a tracker and takes Torres’ prints. Jenny, his date, is somewhat cautious. Torres strikes out. Sanchez takes Torres’ straw for DNA. The fingerprints matched the ones in Judy’s apartment. The squad goes after Torres. He’s on another date. They arrest him. He was hooking up with his fiancée.

The Chief needs to take part of the interrogation. Fritzi arrives too. They tell him that there is a computer server problem. The Chief shows him all of the evidence because he denies knowing Judy Lynn. It’s not a crime to lie against the police, but it is a lie to do so to the FBI. They arrest him on that. He requests counsel.

Tau shows the Chief Judy’s last vlog. She died before she had time to post it. It was while Mark was in the shower. She was going to tell Mark off. The fiancée tells the Chief that Mark was just having a relapse.

The Chief wants to know who scratched the Camaro, because it wasn’t Judy. She was doing a vlog. The scratch happened at 9:45PM. They go back to the apartment with Torres. The Chief thinks that it’s the apartment manager Guilford. Somehow, Guilford helped Judy set up the cable in her closet. There was a stool placed near the hole. It’s Guilford. He keyed the car. He smothered Judy. She caught him when he tried to leave the closet. He pushed her against the wall. He carried her to the bed and smothered her when she started screaming again.

The Chief looks stunning in the red dress that she’s wearing to meet the mayor.
