It’s fitting that this show will premiere on Fox, since this was the network of the X-Files. Fringe has got much in common with the X-Files, yet it is different. Fringe is the latest show of wunderkind J.J. Abrams. Like most new shows, the pilot was leaked on the internet a few weeks ago.
Just like a few other shows, like True Blood, I’m happily surprised by Fringe. The production values are great and I’m enjoying it a lot. A lot of money has been pumped into this show, and it just looks fabulous. The protagonists are also an interesting bunch. There isn’t much more that we learn of the Pattern, but Massive Dynamics is most definitely deeply connected with those events, even though they aren’t sharing their information with Agent Dunham.
I think that this show takes a few common elements from Alias, especially for all the things that concerned the mystic scholar Milo Rambaldi. The same kind of esoteric science is involved in this show. It’s done very well. I’d actually like to see this type of mystic science have more of an impact on the show. It would suit the show very well. A bit of the supernatural wouldn’t be bad either.
Warning: spoilers ahead

Fringe is one of the best shows on TV right now. It’s getting better and better, and I like it maybe a bit more than X-Files. Why? There are less filler episodes. Most episodes deal with the mythology of the show.
We found out what exactly happened to Peter in the episode Peter. It details how and why Bishop went to the other universe in 1985, piercing the veil between universes for the first time. There were unintended consequences, things that will happen because of this.
It begs the question: would you destroy another universe to save your child?
In this episode, we see that more an more, Bolivia is starting to unravel. Her task will be a lot harder because Newton is apprehended in this episode.

Peter is out with Bolivia.
Senator Van Horn is clipped by a truck in his Lincoln Towncar. They don’t know that he’s a shapshifter. He’s got no pulse and he’s still breathing. Newton arrives and starts shooting people. Broyles is on the premises. He takes a hostage, shoots Van Horn in the head, and manages to escape.
The code for this week is SHIFT.
Peter is at Massive Dynamic talking with Nina Sharpe. Walter is briefing some of his new staff. He’s in charge of MD now. They get called on a case. It’s Van Horn. Walter and Peter want to try and repair it. Newton shot it through the left eye. It was very deliberate. It may be a weak part of their bodies.
Bolivia calls Newton. Fake Horne knew about Bolivia. Newton tells Bolivia that on some level, Peter knows that Bolivia isn’t Olivia.
Walter triggers something and Fake Horn starts ticking again. He is reactivated in some fashion. Walter has him transferred to a MD lab.
Bolivia tells Newton that Fake Horn is still alive.
Bolivia and Peter find out that Fake Horn knew everything about their cases. He was requesting classified files on them. She tells him that Fake Horn’s body is on the 23rd floor of MD. He needs to take care of it. Newton contacts some shifter named Ray. He’s been under the same cover for 5 years.
Walter finds out that the shifters mimic emotional connections. This in turn makes them develop real emotions. It’s hardwired into them and their operation system. He wants to use Van Horn’s widow to elicit an emotional response out of Fake Horn. Broyles is a family friend and convinces Patricia to try. During the procedure, it gets up and starts spouting some names and numbers. Patricia says that next month was their anniversary. They were going to a bunch of hotels. Those were the names of the hotels. They were leaving next week.
Bolivia gets a message. She needs to leave. The attack will happen in 15 minutes. While Walter is getting some comfort food at the MD cafeteria, he gets an idea and goes back up to his lab. Ray, the cop is in the elevator with him. Ray takes out the device to shift. Walter figured out that the shapeshifter has a brain near his spine.
Peter tells Bolivia that she’s a different person since she came back from the other side.
Ray takes out the device in the spine. He’s got a gun on Walter. Walter stabs him with a surgical knife. They cross paths with the shapeshifter. Peter goes to check on Walter while Olivia goes after the shifter. She just pretends.
Ray comes home and hands the device to Newton. Newton didn’t understand Ray’s hesitation. He’s grown fond of his fake family. Newton tells him that it is time to move on. When he won’t do so, Newton shots Ray in the head. Bolivia and Peter arrive on the scene. They go after Newton. In a tunnel, Newton flips his car. Bolivia is able to retrieve the disc.
Newton is in custody. Bolivia gives him something to destroy himself. Newton reiterates that she isn’t fully committed to the cause because she cares too much.
While Peter and Olivia screw, Newton is destroyed.
