I’ve been a Nathan Fillion fan for quite a while. Ever since Firefly, I was really impressed by his acting. Since he is starring in a new series named Castle, I took it upon myself to watch it weekly.
Anyway, what do I like about Castle? Well it stars an obnoxious, womanizing novelist. Detective Kate Beckett is a closet hottie, played by Stana Katic. Her hotness is kind of hard to explain. The actress is quite hot, but in Castle, she toned it down. She doesn’t wear much makeup and favors a natural look, kind of like “Oh I’m hot, but I could be the girl next door, BTW, FYI, I’m still smoking hot.” That’s how I described her in my mind. She’s kind of got the ex-catwalk model look going for her, which is quite good.
So that’s a good point. Plus she’s Canadian and a good actress. That’s always a good combination.
Warning: spoilers ahead
The show centers around a novelist who is brought in to help deal with a string of murders which seem to be taken from the pages of his novels. At the same time, Castle has hit massive writer’s block after killing off the hero of his mystery book franchise, Derek Storm. Through Beckett, he is able to write once again.
Halfway between a drama and a romantic comedy, Castle is a fun show to watch. The characters play around a lot, making the viewer wonder when or if they will ever get together. It didn’t take Castle long to find out what makes Beckett tick. He uses clues and his imagination deftly.
ABC has started to release chapters of Richard Castle’s new book Heat Wave on its website. They are up to chapter 8 and I haven’t started yet, but it’s a pretty cool tie-in to the show.

Alexis and Martha are doing strange vocal yoga exercises. It’s to train Alex vocal chords. Castle gets called to a case. An officer was found dead. The badge and gun are fakes. The gun is loaded with cheap tequila. He’s a male stripper. His car is nearby. The car is filthy inside. His name is Derek Brookner. He was heading to an address around the corner. He was probably coming from there. They wake up a few girls in skimpy clothes sleeping off a rough night. None of them make much sense, so they bring them into the station. Castle has the smart idea of checking up on the photos they took. In the photos, they find Camille. She wasn’t at the party when the cops arrived. Camille has got a record. The ex-boyfriend was the stripper and he filed a restraining order against her. She left right after Officer McNaughty. They bring her in for questioning. She says that the stripper was desperate for money. He was a bad actor.
Laney finds a long blond hair on his body, that’s from a man on steroids.
From his employer, they learn that Derek used to work at a strip club called the Package Store. Most of the guys here are using steroids. Beckett and Castle go to the club. Some guy named Hans had issues with Derek. They find him pretty easily. Hans tells them to question the rich cougar that Derek was dating.
Rebecca Dalton is the cougar. She’s a rich widow. At her apartment, they are met by Dalton’s attorney. He asked Dalton to borrow $25K. She thought that he was cheating. She hired a PI. When she saw the photos, it made her decide to leave her. The photos are of Derek meeting some bikers. They find out that Billy Graeme is one of them. He’s in charge of the Visigoths biker gang. Graeme swore vengeance against Derek, because he was on the TV show that put him in jail. Derek was playing Graeme in a reenactment. One of Graeme’s crew led Derek to his murder.
Beckett and Castle visit him. They surmise that Graeme was pissed because Derek was wearing clan colors on TV. Graeme says that Derek gave him a donation of $25K. Graeme finds out that his girlfriend met him behind his back to tell him to bring some money.
Billy’s alibi holds up. The money came from Jesse Mandalay, one of Derek’s aliases. He took money out Sunfire Ltd. Sunfire is linked to an offshore account. Derek was hired to play the role of Jesse Mandalay.
Mandalay was running some kind of real estate scam. He was “selling” some lofts. Mandalay was doing this to other property developers. They think that Derek was working with a partner, who was raking in the money. Dalton is his silent partner.
They question Dalton again. It was her lawyer. He’s the killer. The murder weapon was found in his office. He confessed.
