It’s fitting that this show will premiere on Fox, since this was the network of the X-Files. Fringe has got much in common with the X-Files, yet it is different. Fringe is the latest show of wunderkind J.J. Abrams. Like most new shows, the pilot was leaked on the internet a few weeks ago.
Just like a few other shows, like True Blood, I’m happily surprised by Fringe. The production values are great and I’m enjoying it a lot. A lot of money has been pumped into this show, and it just looks fabulous. The protagonists are also an interesting bunch. There isn’t much more that we learn of the Pattern, but Massive Dynamics is most definitely deeply connected with those events, even though they aren’t sharing their information with Agent Dunham.
I think that this show takes a few common elements from Alias, especially for all the things that concerned the mystic scholar Milo Rambaldi. The same kind of esoteric science is involved in this show. It’s done very well. I’d actually like to see this type of mystic science have more of an impact on the show. It would suit the show very well. A bit of the supernatural wouldn’t be bad either.

Fringe is one of the best shows on TV right now. It’s getting better and better, and I like it maybe a bit more than X-Files. Why? There are less filler episodes. Most episodes deal with the mythology of the show.
We found out what exactly happened to Peter in the episode Peter. It details how and why Bishop went to the other universe in 1985, piercing the veil between universes for the first time. There were unintended consequences, things that will happen because of this.
It begs the question: would you destroy another universe to save your child?
This episode is all about numbers stations and their broadcast. Someone is trying to cover their tracks.

The code for this week is DECAY.
In Stockton, MA, some lighthouse guy sets the frequency to 6955 kHz. In Chinatown, some guy is working on cracking some codes. Some woman is listening in. It looks like some kind of conspiracy nut thing. They all go bonkers when they hear the transmission.
Something happened to all of them. They are different. Their bodies were taken over by other people. This episode is taking place in our universe.
Peter brings Bolivia some breakfast in bed. Walter calls him. He doesn’t want Peter to work on the device from the other side.
Broyles called the team because 15 people were affected by retrograde amnesia. It might be a test run for some terror attack. They were listening in to numbers stations. These are shortwave radio emissions that are of uncertain origin. They contain artificially generated voices reading streams of numbers in a variety of languages. They are used to send messages to spies. They are used to send encoded information to other places.
They consult Nina Sharpe. She tells them about numbers stations. There is some difficulty between Peter and Walter. She asks Sharpe for help, but Sharpe tells her that Olivia usually speaks with them if there is an issue. This behavior has aroused Sharpe’s suspicions.
They get a call. They traced the transmission to a tower. It was broken into. They find a strange floating device in the center of it all. A bunch of people were killed. The floating device is floating because of magnetics.
Walter is working on the transmission. There was a pulse combined with the numbers station broadcast. Peter says that the people who were listening in were about to crack the code. The people behind the numbers stations want to keep the secret.
Peter tells Walter that the device from the other side responded directly to him when he tested it. He can’t ignore that.
They traced the print they found to the device to someone. His name is Joseph Feller. They go back to see Becky to find out more clues about what she was working on.
Meanwhile, Joseph Feller is working on another tower with another device. He plugs it in and it affects a specific flight. It goes down and there are 20 more amnesiacs. There are six dead as well. They found another cube.
Peter and Olivia question some expert. He gives them a book called The First People by Seamus Wiles. It’s about the first humans who evolved on Earth, before the dinosaurs.
Sharpe comes by to see Walter. Walter says that Peter is playing right into Walternate’s hands. Walternate built as much of the machine as he good. He gave the blueprints to Peter so that he could complete the rest. The machine will destroy one of the universes, probably theirs if Walternate has his way.
Peter finds the numbers of the first broadcast in the book. He analyzes the transmitter and finds a new Polish processor. They are regulated and the sale can be traced. Bolivia excuses herself and goes somewhere. She goes to find Feller. He was sloppy. She wants him to spot. He’s on orders to deploy another pulse. She gets a call from Broyles. They traced the sale to Feller.
They hear shooting and something drops form the window. It’s Feller. Feller was a shapeshifter. The data storage unit is also busted.
Astrid gets an idea for a cypher matrix. The numbers indicate locations. The closest one is in Jersey. They start digging. They find something. It’s a piece of the machine.
Astrid ID the last location. The locations are all about the pieces of the machine. They will find all of the pieces of the machine this way.
Bolivia sends a message to the other side. She is told to initiate Phase Two.
On the other side, Olivia is told that there won’t be any more tests. They canceled the last test because they got what they needed. It’s time for Olivia to go home.
